Your first bar fine, do you still remember it?
Anyhow, Synaesthesia's story got me thinking about what it was like being new in BKK  , and not seeing a thread on the topic (at least within recent history), I figured it would be okay to start one, although I am sure the topic has been addressed here before, many times. Ah heck, I just want to tell the story of my first two BF's. And in turn perhaps hear about a few others.
I was staying at a tall, nondescript Hotel on Silom recommended by a good friend of mine who knew nothing about BKK, but who knew enough to tell me that I had to be sure to visit Patpong while I was in town visiting the cultural sights. Having taken him to some strip clubs in Austin, Texas, he naturally wanted to repay me in kind.
I was overwhelmed by the vendors of Patpong 1, and, admittedly, even more so by the seemingly limitless number of sexy Thai girls in the bars that lined the infamous street. They were all f*cking gorgeous! I didn't know what to make of the scene, or what to believe. I understood, of course, from somewhere or other, that I could pay the equivalent of a couple of drinks and take the girl out of the bar, and for the price of a lap dance or two I could actually have sex with her.
But that all seemed too unbelievably easy to be true, and with the mamasans aggressively trying to make me buy lady drinks and "pay bar", I knew there had to be a catch somewhere. So I held my ground, saying "no" to everything. But after a long while of sitting alone, and noticing the action around me, I decided to take a wild chance and asked one of the girls on "stage" to have a drink with me. (The bar, by the way, was incredibly narrow, with high seats up against each wall.)
She was pretty, tall and skinny. Dark skin. And spoke almost no English. I knew how to say swat dee krap and kop koon krap. I didn't yet know how to say, khun suai mahk na krap. But it didn't matter, as this girl obviously liked me. No doubt about that. She had her hand on my leg and she was looking at me intently with these amazing eyes. No half-bored, do you want a lap-dance-or-f*ck-off girl here! Wow! When the mamasan returned with her "pay bar" mantra, I awkwardly asked how much.

In the shower, as she/he was washing me I decided I should check to see what she/he felt like, but she/he was shy and avoided my hand. By now my paranoia was starting to grip me in a most undignified manner. In that dark, dank little room above Patpong 1, with the noise of the foot traffic and bars below still clearly audible, I was convinced that I had made a terrible mistake that I would long live to regret.

We continued on until I finally finished, but I was rattled to say the least, and glad to be out of there when all was done and said. Or not said. But thought.
A night or two later, I found myself floating upwards through the again seemingly endless bars of the equally infamous, but supposedly more expat friendly, Nana Entertainment Plaza. I eventually landed at the side of a circular, rotating bar of naked Thai girls. What a wonderful bar, I had never been in such a fun place before! Everyone was flirting with me it seemed, even the waitresses. Not that I wasn't young and handsome back then, but still!

And those two experiences will forever be indelibly marked in my memory of Patpong, NEP, and LOS, as they were the gateway to everything else. Amen.

Yes I remember.

I do not remember for sure.
Though I remember some of the circumstances around my first Bangkok-job. If only because it was two female colleagues from our Bangkok office, who I had just met for the first time the day earlier at the office, that took me to a soapy.
