During my last visit to the LOS I got some great advise of some members on buying Breitling watches and got an £800 discount (40% off the UK RRP) of a watch that I bought.

I wish to purchase a Rolex when I return, can anyone advise me on where to buy real rolexes in Bangkok and what sort of discount are you likely to receive in comparison to prices in the USA or UK.

BKK Banger
Lots of places to buy.

The concessionaire is on Wireless Road just down from the Plaza Athenee. Fully trained technicians on call. This is the place to go for spare parts and servicing, not expensive for the labour but the spare parts are ridiculous.

Sellers include a shop on the ground floor in the Emporium Sukhumvit 24 which has quite a range, a shop in Siam Square (I think Soi 6) and various places around town but frankly I wouldn't bother.

The prices in BKK are quite high, there is a luxury import tax (35%???) plus 7% VAT.

If you want a better deal then buy in UK. If you want a gold Day Date new you can pay around a discounted 8,000 GBP. In Bangkok they would want around 14,000 GBP which is higher than list price in UK.

I buy all my Rolexes in UK then bring them out. If they were from a high street shop (possible discount 30% on list for gold ones) then I reclaim the VAT.

My last Rolex Daytona stainless steel model cost 3,200 GBP off the shelf in UK. Here the Emporium had one for 5,000 GBP.

Breitlings, Tags, Gucci, Armani, Adidas are all cheaper in Bangkok because they do not have the status of Rolex. Rolex is the peak of sophisticated taste, especially when encrusted in diamonds, and appeals to the Chinese market.

Wathfinders.com usually have a selection of models in UK on their website which are reasonably priced. You may want to try there first to establish how much to pay.

Haggling is expected in these places!!!!!

Hmmm. Subjective of course.

BKKbanger,

To the best of my knowledge, the import duty on watches is only 5% (there is of course VAT of 7% as well).

Generally speaking I find that luxury watches here are much cheaper than in the UK and are comparable in price to the best offers on the internet. I put this down to the retailers relatively low overheads. Anyway this is certainly true of some brands - Patek Philippe, Frank Muller and IWC for instance.

I am sure you know your stuff on Rolex - maybe there is an exclusive distributor here who extracts outrageous margins. Anyway, with the internet it is so easy to check prices.

rolex prices are fixed.

price fluctuation depends on duty. most favourable would be hong kong. cheaper than switzerland.

a daytona goes for as much as Sfr 5'000.00, if you are lucky to get one.

I would advise against buying in thailand.

There are excellent 2nd hand ones in MBK on the (I think) 3rd Floor (anyway where all the phones and watch/jewelry shops are).

I've heard that people travel to Norway to buy "cheap" Rolex watches.

Seems kind of strange to me, as Norway is not a cheap country. But, it may be some obscure tax rules.

a friend of mine just connected through Soeul Korea and said duty free was cheap there. Duty free is usually not that good a deal for Americans.

Best deals I have found in Asia are in Kuala Lumpur! I got a Cartier Tank for less than my buddy, who's a jeweler in LA, can get whoelsale.

Rolex is a tough animal because they are still quite a status symbol as mentioned previously. I think if not KL, then Hong Kong only because there is so much dealer competition. BKK is ok but not one of the least expensive I have seen.

Jamacia is the cheapest I found for high end watches. If ever you are able to get there on vacation, take one of trips to the famous Dunn River Falls, and on the way back, you will stop at a tourist shopping area (I cannot call it a mall), where there are several watch outlets. I got a Breitling for about 60% of the regular European price. Looking back, I wish I got a Rolex. I have also heard that Dubai is cheap.
