Same experience (by proxy, via my nephew's report) here --- we spoke the other day, and he reported how Panthip is like a ghost town on the bottom floor, with hardly any vendors, no DVDs, etc...
Anyone know what's going on?

Yes, they're 'clamping down'. I was there on Wednesday evening and there were signs of recent anti-pirate activity. And then a man with a peaked hat (he looked 'senior') turned up with some policemen and some reporters. Quick tour of the ground floor and they were gone. Only the stalls selling pirated perfume and wire were still open. The Thai government is coming under a lot of pressure from the US to stamp out pirated DVDs and software.
Funny...they don't seem to be doing much about China.

Yeah, funny - they don't seem to be doing much about Chine, regardless what they do. The Chinese even have us singing their 'One China' bullshit chorus, like good little children - all the while pretty much stabbing our Taiwan allies in the back.
Yep, we're the lapdogs of an oppressive, non-democratic dictatorship, all the while selling out our democratic allies. I am more and more convinced that if China were to militarily take Taiwan, the US reaction will be a whimpering "Oh well!"
Back to the subject at hand - I kinda thought it might be something of that sort (reporters, how fun) - good thing there are still plenty of alternate shops...

The clampdown is very active. I was there yesterday and it is very much like a ghost town.
Just ask though and you can pretty much still find what you are looking for. They will take you to another location to browse for what you want. I just talked to a couple of the guys that are selling the "sexy moovies" and they were helpful in pointing me to the right people and stalls. It's still alive, just a bit more underground now. Ask and ye' shall receive.

More than 200 policemen raided shops in the Klong Thom and Ban Mo areas and seized over a million pirated CDs, VCDs and DVDs yesterday at the start of a 90-day campaign to stamp out their illegal manufacture and distribution.
It went on to mention Pantip, and a few other places.

Not quite sure what that was all about. I was merely refering to the number of high-quality pirate CDs, VCDs and DVDs produced in China and the fact that I haven't read much about the US government or US companies making much of a fuss about it. Which is funny because it's a bigger problem there than here. And the US government makes vague, or not so vague, threats to the Thai government almost weekly about the pirate 'problem'. They're very cheap (in China) and very good. The packaging often appears (in the material I have seen that a friend who is a frequent visitor to China brings back) better than the 'Western' equivalent.
