Ok, I just bought a camera that's way too expensive to carry around at night in BKK and PP. I'm looking for a cell phone with a built in camera since I can keep it discreet (until it rings). I would like for it to work in Europe and Asia. Anyone know of a brand and a good vendor for something like this? TIA.

Black cats,

I dont know about in bkk, but I just recently bought a camera phone here in the US. It's the motorola V600. It's pretty sweet. It's Qual-mode, so it should work in Europe and in Asia. I got it for $200 with 1 year agreement with Cingular. I think you can get them on Ebay for a lil bit more. Pm me if you want me to pick you up one. I think i'll be in bkk at around the same time with you during Sept.

Thanks for the rcommendation Shawn, but don't buy me one I'd prefer to look for one myself in MBK. I'll look out for that model. Besides, if we don't catch up with each other you'd be stuck with an extra phone. I was hoping for pointers as to a good vendor in MBK, since there's so many.

black cats,

I think that the vendors chop and change so much, that a good vendor today could be gone tomorrow.

I did have a good look around MBK for phones when was there last year, and based on what I saw, and also from talking to a few people, Thai seem to be quite typical with other Asian cultures, with the newest is trendy, and the old stuff is very 'old hat'. This means that the second hand market is reasonably good value. But when I was looking, there were second hand phones for sale that were available new in Europe.

I have a phone with a camera. Rarely use it, simply because there is no optimal zoom. But it does have removable memory, which is very useful, and some kind of low light correction, which I guess could be useful for taking shots in Gogo bars.

Might be worth doing some research into good phones, and drawing up a shortlist.

Thanks jnr,

I know what you mean about MBK, that cell phone floor is a madhouse. Second hand sounds the way to go or just not the "released an hour ago" models. I don't intend to take pictures in go-gos for obvious reasons, but some night shots in PP at Martini's, Sharky's etc. would be cool. My digital camera is an SLR type. Great for daytime tourist stuff but mugger's bait in PP at night I'm sure, hence the cell phone option.

I know someone who bought a little girl one of those Nokia, sort of pointy shaped ones, new model, takes great pics, or at least so I heard from the guy she sold it to recently

black cats,

Have you thought of just buying a cheaper digital camera, or even a second hand noe, that you would not loose too much sleep over it it was nicked?

I've got one of those Sony-Ericsson phones with the camera, and I think that a camera like the Fuji Q1 for less than 100 euros would give better pictures.

Assuming you do want to wait for the better technology in phones, which I think will take some time to be mainstream and a reasonable price. As they are only just available in Japan, and their 'phone-gadget' technology seems to be way ahead of anywhere else.

And then to imagine it's hip to carry an expensive phone in BKK.....

Don't worry.... even if you carry a Nokia 3310 you might get mugged....

BKK Banger
I have the Nokia 6600 which is a current camera / phone in BKK and I think retails for about 10,000 Baht.

It has a 2x zoom and night shot capabilities and comes with a 32MB memory card etc.

The criticisms I have are that it is bulky (I prefer the small Nokias) and the shots in go gos are not very good.

Last week I was in Long Gun and decided to grab a shot of one of the dancers. Clearly this would be taboo so I pretended to make a phone call and turned my head to snap away.

The night shot capability builds a picture from the low light readings. This takes several seconds. Hence pictures in this mode are often blurred and indistinct with some speckling.

A young lady dancing around a chrome pole in the slow mode is not too bad but her gyrating and better looking friend has come out as a brown blur. The colours also appear a little off due to the artificial lighting.

Overall I would not bother with one.

i've had the same experience- the cameras on the last two phones i've had have been the least useful funtion. the only interesting thing is that i've figured out how to send mms messages (sms texts with photos).

what I really need is a phone with some sort of password-encrypted screen saver to prevent gf snooping.
