I read $1.50 in PTY, is that what you meant for BKK?, as 150bt would be almost triple that, when you add card fees of 1 to 3% that really makes a case for 'free' TC's

The fee to cash a TC in Thailand is only 35 Baht per check for any amount. I always get TC free from American Express in $500 US increments. Never had problems cashing them in LOS.

In Vietnam HSBC bank will cash TC not problems. On Saturday the little office in the ATM room at HSBC Bank in Saigon will cash TC.

In Cambodia there is a bank associated with AE in PP that will cash TC. Cashing fee is $10 US.

In Manila 2 years ago had no problem cashing $500 TC. Last November the same banks would not cash $500 TC. Had to go to HSBC to get the $500 TC cashed, no problem.

Just tried UOB's ATM. I tried 30,000 B and it spat out 30 x 1,000 B notes. Will try more next time. Now, what the heck to do with da damn 30 K? Perhaps I should have a no shirt rally of my own. Darn it with state of emergency in effect, I'll have to settle for a 4-some.

I have been using UOB for my ATM withdraws because until recently, they
have not been charging the 150B fee... Now they are. Does anyone here know
of other banks that are not charging the 150B fee for ATM use?

thanks, gary

I have recently used Bank Of Ayudhya ATMs with a visa delta debit card 3 times in 3 different cities and all stated on screen that the fee charged was was zero (in contrast to all the other ATMs which say the fee is 150 baht)

Hahaha, you have to watch the Thais very closely to catch them out Krung19. Whilst you are correct that BOA are not charging the 150B transaction fee, what you should be checking is the exchange rate they gave you when you withdrew your money. around 1-1.5 baht lower to the USD than the going rate, so if you withdraw the max 20K thinking you saved the 150 Baht, you've actually paid/lost 580B to 870B on the exchange rate they gave you !
Better off paying the 150B fee.

Meatywsg, I have now returned to the UK and checked my bank statements carefully - the rates of exchange given by Bank of Ayudhya were the same as all the other banks I used which did charge the 150 baht fee (allowing of course for minor day-to-day fluctuations in rate). I think you are therefore incorrect in suggesting they are somehow fixing the exchange rate to subsidise their free service. Their favourable performance in this respect (i.e not charging an ATM fee) has also been noted on the pattaya forum. All the banks ATM rates of exchange were better than the rates being offered for cash at exchange booths.

Charles Schwab Bank's High Yield Investor Checking Account refunds ALL domestic and international ATM charges. Drawback: no bricks-and-mortar branches, except in Reno, Nevada. Easy to transfer money in/out with ACH, and I was easily able to set up ACH transfers (instead of SWIFT) to my Bangkok Bank account, through their New York branch. Fees are about US$10 for any amount up to (I believe) $20,000. Exchange rate is Thai onshore rate.

Recommended.
