I like to get massages at "legit" places. The massage is generally better and a HJ finish always comes with an oily massage. Now, at the places that are fairly open about offering sex as well as massage, the girls always negotiate the price up front and after the HJ they boot you out even if your hour is not quite up! The "legit" girls, on the other hand, always seem to go through the same routine: They gradually work their way down to the "pup tent" under the towel, then they brush against it a few times, then they finally just grab ahold of it and start yanking away  . AND, if your time isn't up, they proceed to finish the massage!
Now they always seem to do this without any mention of money AND the sometimes seem pleasently surprised when I tip them 500b!
So, what's the deal? Am I overpaying? Or is their reaction just a big act?

I always believe you tip what you are happy with and leave it at that.
Sometimes the smile is worth it, certainly better than some pouty bar girl sneering at a sum for two hours work that is 6 times the National Daily wage.

A 500 baht tip is normal for a soapy massage. But an oil massage is different.
If the oil massage costs 800 baht for 2 hours, and the special costs 1000 baht (usually 500 - 1500 baht depending on service provided), then there is no other tip given.
I am not clear on exactly what you did, or how much you paid for the massage.

500 is probably fine; ultimately, like Yurune says, tip what you are happy with. A few weeks ago I had a very good 90 minute oil massage in Pattaya for 500B and tipped 500B (no other extra costs involved) ; on the same trip I had a lousy 1700B massage in one of the huge MPs on Ratchada in BKK and I regretted tipping her 300B.
Perhaps the best tip is the one that makes both of you happy.

am always interested that people seem to think it ok to tell other people what to do with their money! too often I see forum members telling others to pay 'such and such' as it keeps the price low for them (big d aside who pays what HE wants to pay but understands that he may or may not get a 'yes')

500B is a good tip. It IS a lot of money to the Thai girl.
Whether it is a lot to you depends on your $ standing, how good was the service, quality of room, girl's looks and how much they charged you in the first place.

Another way to get your full time is to get along with the girl. If the girl is comfortable with you and likes you, she will keep you there as long as possible. I've never had any trouble with the clock in Thailand, Hong Kong or Macau. I just get along with the girls and try to give them a hard on, much like myself!

I agree with "Mr. Prez" and Yurune.
There is no golden formula on how much to tip. It's your money, so tip whatever you feel comforable with.
