Swinging sex has become fashionable among couples in higher income groups, without regard for the inherent problems, a seminar was told.
Most participants did not concern themselves with the possibility of sexually transmitted diseases, the effect on their family life or the bad example they were setting for the younger generation.
They were more concerned with immediate gratification of their desire to experience casual sex with a variety of partners.
The issue was raised at a health care festival seminar organised by the Medical Association of Thailand.
Hundreds of people were drawn to the topic.
Assoc Prof Supatra Suphab, also a columnist, said swinging sex had become increasingly popular, with thousands of people joining the club.
She first heard about the club three years ago from a man who was formerly a member. He said he had been in the club for nearly three years, driving once every month or two from his home in a rural province to meet with others at top five-star hotels in Bangkok.
The most frequented hotels were in the Lat Phrao and Sukhumvit areas.
``A whole floor is rented in advance for members, who draw lots to get the number of their partners. The matching was never repeated.
``Identities of the members are kept confidential. Each member never knows the name of the person they slept with,'' Ms Supatra said.
``They just see each other's face, have sex and then leave.''
At first her informant had gone alone, but later his wife joined the club.
``When he came to see me he seemed worried because his wife had become addicted to swinging sex, even though he had become bored and wanted to quit.
``She still drives to Bangkok every week to join the group,'' she said.
Each person had to pay thousands of baht in membership fees. The higher the price the more it attracted people, since the ability to pay indicated a high social status.
Ms Supatra said these people wanted to try sex with different partners, and it was usually assumed that swinging sex was safe from HIV/Aids because most members were in the higher social bracket, such as physicians, teachers, military and police.
Members were happy because they were not bound by social or marriage responsibilities, and sexual demand usually balanced supply.
She was worried that loose sexual behaviour among teenagers could develop into swinging habits when they grow up, with all the attendant risks.
Dr Nikorn Dusitsin, of Chulalongkorn University's Centre for Studies in Human Sexuality, said there was a lack of understanding of sexuality in Thai society.
Many men believed the size of their penis was important in sexual intercourse and reverted to silicone injections to enlarge it without any knowledge of the possible side-effects, including pain.
