I am deciding between Samui and Koh Chang to take my serious TGF on a trip from Dec. 28-Jan 4.  I want a romantic place with at least some nightlife, but I hate the crowds.  What are these islands like at this time of year.  I was in Samui in May and it was pretty dead, not to mention the brain dead hippies.

I've been to Ko Chang in Juli and January ...

In Juli the water is clowdy (no snorkelling/diving)  ... big dangerous waves ... several people drowned (i was told) ... 400 baht for a small hut with fan/cold water shower on the beach to 2000 for an AC hotelroom with seaview ... not much happening there ... a few quiet bars ... great seabreaze though ... cools you down a bit ...

In January the water is beautiful ... very clear and quiet ... great for snorkelling/diving ... prices for hut/hotel doubled at this time ... still not much going on in the nightlife ... a few small bars on the road/on the beach ...

It's not a really romantic place ... sunsets a very beautiful though ... not much places you can go to except walk along the beach ...

Spent a few days on Koh Chang in June, and if you're looking for nightlife I would think Samui is a lot better. But Chang is a nice place, under development several places. I think they have plans to make it more famous as a tourist destination.

It can be a romantic place though. One of my favorite memories is bathing with my TG in the waterfalls at the national park.

Les ... you were there in the rainy season I think ... in January it's "dry season" and then there's not much left of the waterfalls ... but Koh Chang is a nice place ...

I'd go for Samui, been a couple of years but The roads have to better now than then.  Some nice quite romantic spots.  Chang has a coupl of waterfalls but it's quite a hike to them.  No night life that I can remember.  Taxi service sucks.

Kaiser~ Just got back from Koh Chang (never been to Samui) but will tell you this. The natural environment and little else will be available to you in Chang. In season I imagine it's a divers paradise, marine sanctuary is vast. But it is a very rural place- as in very few massage venues, 1 disco, very few restaurant choices beyond Thai food, very little respite from the heat (a/c is kind of a novelty there). In short, it is very rural and very laid back. Most of the place is closed after 9 pm, or so it seems. But that in itself did have a nice charm, and the natural environment there was superb.  There is NO public transport but you can rent a motorbike for 200-250 bt/day and you will need one.

I stayed at the Banpu Koh Chang Hotel. Turned out to be the best decision in my book too. It's pretty ideally situated on the beach and to the retail venues and it has it's onw pool (one of the few that do). There's construction going on all over the place though so things are changing fast.

It appears here that 'bungalow' is used loosely and ubiquitously, meaning it can be many things from platial to spartan. Choose carefully if you go!

At the time I was looking to get away from it all. Motored around and got almost to hte end of the road where I discovered the place I will definitely coem back to next time I got a honey with me. http://www.seaviewkohchang.com/welcome.html
This is in an isolated section of the island near to the totally exotic, enchantingly rural gateway port to the marine sanctuary you access via the Thai Bang Bao fishing village if you were to come here you'd wanna jsut stay put and not leave. It was one of the few resorts with their onw spas too.

Another thing...

I booked 3 nights at the Plaloma Cliff Resort at Koh Chang, but when I got there swiftly changed my mind because the resort sucked ass. We were promised a bungalow, which we did not get because of construction. We got a room in a "sea shell" house, with terrible bathroom etc. Got the hell out of there, went down the road to the Hillside Hotel, which was pretty good. A/C, nice pool. 1100 baht.

And of course no refund from Plaloma. This is Thailand...

Thanx Bros.   I think we will do Samui.  We do want to d that bathing and kissing under the waterfall thing, the making out on the beach (and f_cking if possible-at night under a blanket), and we both love dancing and the nightlife.  I'm just concerned about too many damn tourist, hippies, American potheads, and E-trash.  I think we will hit it before the Christmas vacation rush.

Koh Chang... is good.. if you're into the quiet relaxed thang go to bang bau fishing village... some very nice bungalows near the end of the jetty  1500 bhat per night high season.... 750 bhat per night low season... (that's what I paid anyway)...  there's two discos on koh chang itself   Holllywoods disco, and Star Bar..
Beer bars with girls are few and far between... you'll find most of em in White Sands (main tourist area)  there's the waterfalls, you can go on guided tours through the jungle... always make sure you have a local guide who knows where all the wild boar traps are...  you don't want to stumble on one...   loads to do... they even have amonkey training farm...  if you're into relaxing and sitting around relaxing /chilling out.. head to Jaa Bar (between white sands and bang bau village)  this bar is so relaxed it's a wonder everyone stays awake (also a good place to pickup falang backpackers)
Best to hire a little motorbike... but take it easy.. on one evening i saw the aftermath of 5 crashes...

Romantic walks can be had walking along white sands beach in the moonlight..   good thing about koh chang is it's virtually impossible to get lost driving around... there is only one main road that encompasses most of the island...  next time I'm there I will be taking a TG with me cause it can get  a wee bit boring and the quality of the local B/G's is somewhat disappointing... saying that I still managed to hook up with one for an evening of horizontal jogging...   best to visit there before it turns into samui or phuket....

another place you should think of is Samet Island... the place is relaxing/chilling can be very romantic... but bring a b/g with you caus when I was there a few years ago I saw no sign of a p4p scene at all....  you might get the odd jungle f_ck though...

rock on

If you can afford it, stay at the Coral Bay Resort on Samui. You should have the tranquilty that you desire, though not too far from the nightlife.
