Been there, done that, but in reverse order and without tour. Ko Pha Ngan is between Tao and Samui, and could be an interesting stopover if you aren't restricted to the tour and if it's Full Moon Party time there at the time, and if you're into the international rave scene or just want to say you've been. If you go to Tao you should dive, scuba preferably - that's what Tao is all about. Bring a couple of good books for the long boat rides - and a pack of dramamine. It can get rough - then the barfin starts around you and spreads quickly. However maybe the tour catamaran can ride out chance rough seas in comfort. Our large boat did not. Take a carry-along that's easy to handle as you sometimes have to leap on and off the boats - again perhaps not a problem on the tour catamaran. Don't expect accommodations with all the comforts of home. On Tao the electricial generators are shut down all night, so if you are lucky enough on the tour to get a hut with beach view, open the shutters for the greatest breezes imaginable, and sleep in total (even though un-airconditioned) comfort. But bring a small flashlight and insect repellent. And...oh yes, your own TG is best insurance. The night life and pickings on Tao and Pha Ngan are not like in BKK - you take your chances otherwise. You'll save a little if you scrap the tour, but if you bring a traveling companion you'll save enough to even pay for her 'friendship' if you two wing it. Samui rocks, unlike others. And the island tour to the mountain top is worth it if you like great views/camera shots. Have fun.

CiaoCiao thanks for the info, I'm a little old for the rave scene and will probably enjoy the 4 day's away from the T.G's as a bit of R&R. Yes Samui is a fantastic place and I'm looking to enjoy myself a little better on my own than last time when I spent 10 day's there (with my farang GF). Peace out
