I have now been in CM for about 6 months and have been dating a girl who sells watches and cds and the night bazaar for about 5 months. Due to her schedule it is entirely unnacceptable to go home at a mere 2 am so here it goes. I will say that while I am not a current resident of BKK it does seem that chiang mai kicks BKKs ass in the afterhours department. 1 DJ one where: chiang mai land what: after hours disco really picks up between 3 am and 5:30 am very dark decent music cheap drinks. 2 The point station where: chiang mai land what:after hours disco currently more trafficed than DJ one but beer is more expensive and better lighting also gets busy earlier. 3 Airbus where: off the moat (does not matter all hookers and tuk tuks know this place) what: after hours disco fun place kind of like bubbles after hours it is taking over from the illustrious spicy as the place for farangs to meet hookers after 2 am. has started charging a farang cover of 100 baht (drink (beer) included). 4 Ozone where: changpuak rd almost to superghighway set back from road next to another disco called rodeo what: after hours disco with significant gay influence but not so much as to be scary. 5 Jam seafood where: chiang mai land what: late night dining with thumping music and good scene after hours 6 Fashion house / aka underworld where: 4 floor parking garage airport plaza what: disco that frequently is open late night but it is better to check first not always open late. 7 War room one where: on chang klan road past chiang mai land on right what: after hours disco very gay 8 City beat where: first block after nawarat bridge heading out of town. what: after hours disco. Good music. conveniently located. small however. great place to hang out with friends bad for picking up. also fairly gay. 9 C-4 where: near chiang plaza. go to end of night bazaar take a left. on your right before the road curves back around. what: late night disco. occasionally frequented by gogo girls. not very busy usually but conveniently located. spin by and check. 10 spicy where:i wont say what: drunk punters, hippies and bad food. go for it if your a f_cking novice well thats all I got for now although I feel like I am definately forgetting one or two places. better than just having petburi 45 and the prince hotel? if you ask me.

Hats off youngexpat... certainly cant think of a list like that for BKK... More to the point that sounds like more decent places to go for than I can find in CM during the normal business hours. How about a quick list of pre-2am places that you like (and preferably are not too obvious). I would be interested even if noone else is.

Impressive! After double digit years in the rose of the north, I have not visited all of the places on your list. Maybe I am getting too rusty, or maybe I did visit some but was just too hammered to remember.

Just came back from Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai. Chiang Rai is not called the silent city for nothing…definitely for people who only enjoys hiking. Night life ? Could not find any. Spent two nights in Chiang Mai and decided to deviate from the tourist night life scene and try the local hangouts. Went to Chiang Mai Land the first night on youngexpat’s recommendation (50 Bhat tuk-tuk ride from night bazaar). It is basically a long road with bars and karaokes. Hostesses at the karaokes I will rate only 5-6 just because they have long hair and a pair of boobs. If there’s a kateoy amongst them, he/she will get a 6 too. There seems to be only two happening bars on Wednesday night, you can’t miss it, it’s the only ones with people going in and out. Went to one called something 2000. Typical Thai bar hangout with standing tables, and a band playing Thai/English songs. Beers are 110 Baht. Maybe it’s Wednesday but the age of the drinkers are definitely young…same age group as RCA crowd in BKK. Rating of the women there is only 7 (I have high standards…spoiled by BKK girls). Pickup possibility for a foreigner is very slim. Saw a number of Germans and Indians trying but not getting anywhere. Maybe the action changes on Friday and the weekends…don’t know, someone else will have to elaborate. Decided to check out the two massage places mentioned on the whorist.com website (Pandora and Sayuri). Directions on the website was very sketchy so I decided not to take a tuk-tuk. With a Cuban cigar in hand, I must have walked about 10 miles in search of these two places (someone owes me a beer for these directions because I gulped down two large bottles in 3 minutes when I reached the second place). First stop is Pandora, head towards Chiang Mai Railway Station on Charoen Muang Rd. and it’s on the left hand side when you past Bumrungrat Rd. There’s a large post with lots of signs (none of them says Pandora at least in English), turn left into that soi and it is on the right side at the end of the soi. Building looks pretty decent from outside but on entering I found the place pretty rundown. I sat down, got quoted 1500 Bhat for a session, squinted at the 9 girls sitting there (5 PM), rated them at most 6.5, stood up, tell the papasan some lie about coming back later with 10 friends and left. Backtracked my way back to Bumrungrat Rd in search of Sayuri. Bumrungrat Rd is a narrow two way soi that does not have a pedestrian walkway at certain sections. I walked the entire road and had to backtrack because once again, the sign for Sayuri is in Thai. Sayuri is a two story building tucked away in a small soi on the left side of Bumrungrat. When you enter Bumrungrat, make the first left when you see neon signs that looks like signs for a small shopping mall. When you enter, there will be karaoke girls sitting at the steps (7 rating). There are 3 tinted doors on top of the stairs, right one leads to karaoke rooms, middle one leads to fishbowl, left one leads to restaurant/stage. I sat down in a booth in the restaurant so I can see the singers on stage and also the girls in the fishbowl. Fishbowl girls are only 7 rating…very disappointed so I did not bother asking the price. However, the singers on stage were quite stunning in their tight skimpy outfits. Ordered myself some chow and drinks and spent the rest of the night in the lounge listening to the singers. There’s about 18 of them and they come in all different sizes and shapes. Had my eyes on two but had enough time to chat with only one of them. Lady drinks are cheap (60?). I’ve never seen this before in Thailand but you can tip the singers by giving the 100 Baht bills to the waitress and they’ll clip the bills onto a lea and put it on the singers while they are singing on stage. Quite a sight to see ten 100 Baht bills presented to the singers…someone’s meir noi I bet. The singer I sat with was cute and everything but had the personality of squashed lychee…thought I could liven her up with a lea of 500 Baht…did not work. So I spent the rest of the night joking with the waitresses about taking them home and practicing my Thai with them. Overall, an enjoyable night there until 1 AM closing time. Unlike BKK where there are tuk-tuks lined up outside at closing time, there was none available. I had to walk 15 minutes to the main road, fighting off two growling mongrels all the way. If you plan to walk there, make sure you take a Burmese fighting stick with you. Enjoyable trip overall to see some mountains and trees. But for quality of girls and action, I still prefer BKK. RCA, Thonglor, Ekkamai still have the hottest women IMHO.

Forgot the best part of the trip was sitting in Starbucks laughing my ass off at an American trying to impress his Thai gf with his Thai...and then to have an Aussie sit down next to me and mumble to his Thai gf "Always the American who's so goddamn loud". I almost spewed my coffee against the window when he said that.
