I have had a 6 or 7 trips there over the last 13 years or so, my Brother spent 18 months there. I liked it in short measures, there are a few p4p bars there ( Butterfly bar is one in particular I remember) Large Diving community, lots of grass smoking, lots of Euro sluts ( in the nicest sense possible), a few irksome backpackers, worth a trip IMHO. I always used to stay at "My Way" Bungalows run by OT and Pan, good people.

I was in Koh Tao 2 years ago when a buddy had pre paid for a 2 night stay at this small bungalow operation. He and his Mrs. had to cancel and he gave it to me. I would have not paid for it. I think it was around 4000Baht per night that he paid. Well, I brought a hurridly found TG from Bangkok and we went for 2 days. Koh Tao is a nice place to relax. The place we were in (and I forget the name) was rather remote but it was just what I needed. Very picturesque views from the bedroom to shag to. I don't think I would want to stay for more than 2 or 3 days unless I was a diver. Lots and lots of dogs. They were everywhere. Herodotis

Yes been there. Love it, but only because I love diving. Five years ago it was a few shacks - boy is it growing fast. Even has cars now!!! We used to dive the reef right in front of the beach - it was great for snorkling too. Now it is completly trashed and polluted.......ahhhh. (never mind) There is some good diving and some not so good diving there! And some of the sites are as busy as Victory Monument on a friday evening! Not a good time to go at the moment 'cause of the weather. The brothers Bok Hah and herodotis have sumed it up to a 't' Not much to do if you dont dive. One great oily massage and extras from a lovely girl half way up the main street on the right. (sorry, cant remember the name of her nor the massage place, but she loved to rumble with a smile) Only time I have shagged farangs in Thailand - but they were Danish and Dutch, both blond, young and both cute (oh- but not at the same time!!) A mate took a "Yammy shake" there in the bar up the hill, and was absolutelyf_ckinwasted for two days - virtually went into a coma and did not remember anything. Now that was some trip!

Any more info on the P4P bars or even oil massage ? Where is Butterfly Bar? I often travel to Koh Tao for diving but do not enjoy the farang nightlife/rave scene. Thanks, MSB

Just got back from a month in LOS + Cambodia and spent some time on Koh Tao (3 days). I was there for all of June Brought a hot little number with me from Bauhaus bar in Lamai.. Good thing too, I dont know where I would have scored there. If you are into diving, this is the place to be because you dont have the 2+ hour boat ride to get out to the good dive sites. I dont dive and mainly went there because the BG I was with was raving about Koh Phang Nguyen which is a 10 min. longtail boat ride. She was right, it was really cool. The snorkeling in the little bay there is incredible. Basically just find one of the longtail guys on the beach, he will drop you off and pick you up when you ask. It's not that big so 4 hours oughta do it and you have to pay admission to get into the "park" although Thais get a discount. Even though there are all these signs about no bottles or cans allowed. I brought a bunch of stuff in my backpack and just took all my trash with me. BRING WATER. A note about longtail boats... By the time I made it out there, I was completely soaked. On the way back, rougher water same story. I should have known when the driver placed my backpack underneath part of the boat...I kept my hip pack on and was rewarded with a non-functioning digital camera, soaked airline tickets and a very moist passport. Koh Tao itself might as well be called Koh Tout because you will be covered with them once you get off the ferry. Beware of the kids in the pickups taking you around to the different places and then trying to charge you 400B when they are going to get a commission from the hotel anyway. My BG chiseled the guy down to 200B after reminding him of this. I didnt really find any nightlife to speak of... mostly falangs going diving, coming back at dusk then going to bed early so they can do it again tomorrow. It was really mellow at night although I did hear some decent music coming across the bay from where we stayed (Koh Tao Cottage) BG points out that the people working there are illegals from Laos and to lock up our stuff. Most nights, I ended up just getting loaded at the room with the BG and listening to techno on my ipod. I have heard that if you go during high season you will have a hard time finding accomodation since the bungalows are combination dive operators selling package deals. There were some decent bungalows on the other side of the ferry dock (turn left down the beach) (Crystal Divers was one I remember) Lying Planet has some words about this. Ferry reccomendation - Take the Lompraya ferry. They give you a ride to the dock from anywhere on Samui. It is a very smooth comfortable high speed catamaran. I think it was 550B... easy to get on it during low season so we didnt bother buying round-trip tickets. It stops at Koh Phangan on the way out and back. This is a good thing if you want to check out Koh Phangnan. Once you get back to Samui they give you a ride anywhere you want to go. Definitely not many backpackers since they dont want to pay the 3 dollars extra it costs to ride the nicer boats. People say it is like going back in time 10 years. Compared to Samui, I would agree. I rented a motorbike (the taxis only hang out by the boat dock) it is very dangerous to ride motorbike not so much due to traffic as poor road conditions. Sand, holes with metal re-bar in them, poor lighting... etc. Hope this helps. It was a very beautiful island. If I went back it would be to dive.
