All,
What are actually the Beach-resorts near BKK where Bangkok people go to have a weekend at the beach ?
I will be in BKK again in 3 weeks and I'm curious to see available options near BKK. I will stay in Pattaya, which might be a starting point. I heard there is an island nearby with nice beaches but I forgot the name.

Next town over from Pattaya, Jomtiem has decent beach and cleaner ocean. I think the islands name is Kok Larn. Easy and quick to get to from Pattaya. I would stay in Pattaya as Jomtiem is only 15 minutes by baht bus.

I finally tried Ko Samet last week. I went there with my TG and stayed 3 days. We left from Bangkok Ekamai bus station to Ban Phe and then took the ferry.
It is a nice little Island that I definitely recommend. We stayed in "Hut house" wood-bungalows which is at the far left of Hat Sai Kaew beach when you arrive from the land.
Comfort is minimal for 1000 THB per day but the view on the splendid white-sand beach is fantastic and you have a veranda. Bungalow Number 8 and 9 are the nearest to the beach but the others are still OK.
The "Sai Kaew Beach Resort" bungalows are of much better quality but prices range from 3000 to 10000 THB for the family suite. Address is http://www.aopraoresort.com
During the day, you can rent a motorbike and go exploring the island, which is great fun. Mostly mud tracks though. No helmet or driving license required but the traffic is low, so the risks are not so high.
For Snorkeling, the best is to book a speed boat to the nearby spots.
I did not see any disco and since I was with my TG, I did not check any night venue. However, enjoying a cocktail in the evening on the beach is great.
