Please can anyone reccomend a mid range hotel in CM close to the action and gf? I will be there in march 2005 for a week. Have previously stayed in the old city at Montri (695 thb) great for loy krathong as the parade passes thapae gate but not so handy for the action at the go go or bars except spotlight. Now looking something closer to loi kroi rd or night bazzaar. thanks in advance

Plan to visit CM myself for the 1st time in april. Does the area where the action is have a name (like the areas in BKK) or is all just near the night bazaar? Dont have clue about Chiang Mai right now - just know its about time to visit it finally after all those years!

"Have previously stayed in the old city at Montri (695 thb) great for loy krathong as the parade passes thapae gate but not so handy for the action at the go go or bars except spotlight. " spotlight is 50 paces from loi Kroh. By closer did you mean a room upstairs in one of the beer bars? do a search on chiang Mai.

No thanks I wasnt looking to stay above the bar beers in loi kroi. what I mean is somewhere nearer or on loi kroi as not to get caught in the one way traffic system if I stay inside the moat again. I was in CM two months ago and there is a new (to me) bar complex on the right hand side before the bridge travelling down loi kroi. Has anyone had any interesting times there? I made the mistake of bringing my own TG from BK with me for loy kratong, so I didnt get a chance to sample the goodies there.

nk888, You do realize that Loi Kroi is also a one way street? It is hard to avoid in Chiang Mai and if you are walking, all the sidewalks (what there are of them) are two way. I really think that you should not limit your hotel choices based on the street system. If you must, then I would suggest that you stay somewhere in the Night Bazaar, possibly Suriwongse (sp?) or the Downtown Inn (I think that is the name, I don't go to that part of town often). I personally think that the one way street system doesn't add that much to travel time, especially if you are using tuk tuks or songtaews. They are used to it and negotiate the streets with an amazing efficiency. As to your other question, I have been to the beer bar center once. The novelty of it got to me and my regular friend was back home in Chiang Rai. Picked up a very serviceable woman of about 30ish, can't remember her name or the bar, but it was near the stage/boxing ring. Drink prices seemed reasonable and I recall that the bar fine was about 300 baht. I ended up paying her 1000 baht for a very enjoyable night and following morning. Good luck with your hotel search, if you need any additional info, don't hesitate to ask.

Yes I guess im just gonna have to accept the one way system means a 3 min delay getting a bg back to my room!!! haha Thanks again for the extra info. btw I have stayed at downtown hotel last year and it was ok although there was a troop of japanese boyscouts there also, so bfast was slow. does anyone have an email an active email address for the Top North HOTEL on moon muang, thapae gate. I stayed there a few times and it was ok. I tried the website but so far no answer...9 days and counting. khup khun khup

Nearly every hotel is guest-friendly. Top North is pretty run down but if you're on a tight budget go for it. Most of the action is centred at the Bar Beer Centre next to Star Six (CEC). This place has about twenty bars (Dante Bar, Cheerleaders etc.) But there is action to be found everywhere.

Was in Chiang Mai two weeks ago. Stayed a couple of nights in the Porn Ping Towers - rooms are not worth the money but definitely guest friendly and fantastic breakfast. Think I was the only farang in the place. Moved to the Royal Lanta hotel which is on Loi Kroi where it intersects with the night bazzar, opposite McDonalds. Room was fantastic, cracking views across the city....and again guest friedly. 1300b per night was a bargain. From there it was a 10 min walk down to the Bar Beer Centre and another ten or so to the bottom of the road - it's all there. Had a couple of honeys from Star Six one night and reception didn't bat an eyelid - recommended.
