Will be visiting Bkk for several days later this year and may plan a side trip to Ayuthaya (about 1.5hrs north of BKK?) need some info on this place since not much have been mention. 1) best and cheapest way of getting there from BKK (bus/train etc.) 2) are the historic sites there worth visiting or should I devote more time staying in BKK instead? 3) Is Ayathaya a one day trip or plan on staying overnite for 2 days to complete siteseeing 4) any info on "girl" actions there (MPs, go-gos, beer bars etc), please include cost for such actions. thanks

Can't help you with girl action, but I found Ayuthaya to be a good day trip, that can be done, comfortably, in a half-day - if you just want to see the various historical ruins. It's worth going, IMO, as it's quite impressive. When I was there last time we did it all in roughly 3 hours once there, including pulling over to the side of the road and feed some elephants. We took a 'limousine' (regular Volvo car) from our hotel, at 1,700 Bht for the duration (which was around 6-8 hours). Gave us more flexibility as we could go wherever we wanted. I would figure that the bus and train would be cheaper, but you then have the conundrum of seeking local transportation. Dr. von Quack!

Day trip. 6 of us took a van then some long tail boats to Ayuthaya. Nice trip. We stopped for lunch too. One thing you have to watch out for is all the side trips the driver wants to make. I am sure he gets a kickback. ie. zoo, snakes, whatever. "no, we do not want to see a miniature Eiffel tower"

I did the Horizon Cruise from the Shangri-La Hotel, I don't think you need to be a guest, but I'm not 100% sure. Leaves the hotel about 8 AM, bus to the ancient capitol, view the royal palace, giant reclining Buddah, and ruins, then return on the hotel's luxury boat with gourmet buffet. About a 4 hour cruise down the river, back to the hotel pier around 5 PM. I highly recommend it, cost was about 1600 per person, as I recall.

You should be able to book a day tour though any travel agent. I paid about 500 baht three years ago. Its worth seeing its not a glitsy as the Bangkok temples so I actually like it more If you'll seen the movie Mortal Combat than you would have seen it. Its similar to Ankor Wat in Cambodia. If you take the day tour you will get back early enought to have dinner and perhaps a soapy massage and or possibly hit some gogo's in the evening. I would't go there and stay overnight not worth it.

Cheapest decent way to get there : go to Victory monument and catch one of the air conditionned minibus there: 75 bahts per person. After that take any taxi/songtaew avalaible and discuss a price for the whole day for him to bring you see the Temples you want to see, then back in bangkok with minibus. Beware, last minibus leave Ayuthaya at 6 PM. Madfrog

Another cheap way is to take BTS to Saphan Khwai or Mot Chit stations, jump a cab to Northern bus terminal (THB50) and catch public air-con bus to Ayuthyaya for THB29. The bus goes thru Ayuthaya so ask driver/conductor to tell you best stop to get off for local tour operators. If you keep an eye out you will see them clustered at the bus stops. Do as Madfrog suggest, negotiate with songtaew driver for hourly rate. Personally, I had had enough after 2 hrs. One ruined temple looks much the same as the next!

I might be interested in checking out a local travel agent for a package to Ayut. (transport, guide etc). From what I gather here, if I arrange my own transportation from Bkk to Ayut, then still have to hire some local to drive me around to all the different places there, the end result may cost the same after adding all the cost and time. So, can U guys recommend any local travel agents in Bkk that have cheap package deals for 1 day trip. Have never used a travel agent in Bkk so assuming like here in the states, there will be good and bad ones and some that will always overcharge for similar packages. So listing good ones with good rates will be appreciated.

Check in your hotel - chances are they have some sort of travel agent / travel arrangements. If so, negotiate with them. I ended up getting the hotel's 'limo' service to take us on a one day trip, to the various ruins, for 1500 Baht. Seeing as how that included visits to everything, and there were 4 of us, it worked out reasonably well. It's quite a nice tour, if you enjoy cultural artifacts, and learning more about Thailand's history. I found it very fascinating... > "One ruined temple looks much the same as the next!" Others, clearly, have not :- ( Dr. von Quack!
