I have been confined to Maha Sarakham for the next week. Any ideas of nightlife activity here? I can't even find a map of the city proper. Where it is on the map, but not roads within city. I was hoping they had someplace to go for a little relaxation. Thanks, Hex'd

Yes, I went and spent some time a local internet cafe. It wasn't long before I was being hit on by the local college girls. It just doesn't work well without a car though. When I couldn't drive her to a hotel, that ended that. They really don't have taxis like in BKK either. Trying to do all of this on the sly is just to much for me. I have decided to wait until we go back to bkk. Everyone knows everyone here. And my wife knows Everyone. Bamboo telegraph and all - I have given it up for now. If I only had that car back....

My best tip in these "Outposts" is just ask a tuk-tuk driver where the action is. They are the ones who know. No matter where you go tell him you want to see more. He will happily take you. A place like Mahasarakram you will know most within half an hour. If not happy take the next driver. Damage maybe 100 Bath or so. If you dont know the language use your fingers.

Hi Gents, Any update on Maha Sarakham. I was invited to a function around there in April that I would expect will be a 2 day thing. Can anyone advise about the logistics of staying in Khon Kaen & travelling out to MS from there. I will have my girl with me, so this has to do with accomm, things to do & logistics rather than P4P, although info in that regard would not be wasted. Cheers, Liam

LiamOZ, I would just stay in MS rather than commute from KK. I spent one night in MS and found it to be a decent sort of place. I stayed at the Visu (sp??) Hotel which seemed to have a nice location, and a dcent price the hotel people were all nice and there is lots of good food all over the place. Personally I find the people in Khon Kaen, especially around the Sofitel and those other hotels sort of jaded, where in MS just a nice feeling. If you do stay in Khon Kaen its a 80 km commute each way. And when I'm in Khon Kaen I always stay at the Sofitel, I really like their breakfast. But with the decline of the dollar, maybe I'll look into other accomidations on my next visit.

LiamOz, I stayed in Mahasarakahm for about a week. That was three years ago. Like BobFiveHead, I stayed at the Visu Hotel. It was ok, the food in their restaurant was good, I came to actually like that little city. My time there was very innocent; I was there to visit a Mahasarakahm University girl I had met and tutored in English in BKK. So, my innocent activities were the following... there is a rather nice night bazaar one night of the week, I could walk downtown from the hotel to a small shopping center, I could get an English-speaking newspaper outside of that shopping center if I arrived early enough, my uni friend and I rode her motorbike to a movie one night... I found the little town rather quiet and relaxing compared to the noise and crush of people that is BKK. One of my best stories that those of you that visit Thailand can really appreciate was one day I was walking back to the hotel. I was the only pedestrian waiting to cross a fairly busy intersection. One stoplight was broken, one was bent at a 45 degree angle, and I was still getting used to traffic using the left-hand side. So I stood there looking confused for a moment. I had noticed some boys in brown standing under a shade tree nearby. Suddenly, one of them sprinted toward and then past me. I thought I was surely in violation of some made-up law. But, this guy stopped in the middle of the intersection, blew his whistle loudly, and stopped all traffic from every direction... just so I could cross. I was dumbfounded and a part of me hated all the attention. But, I have to admit, he was helpful! I saw only one other farang during my week there. He was Canadien and taught at the university. I hope you enjoy your stay; let us know what Mahasarakahm is like today.

that's pretty amazing, not only could you find a talking newspaper, but it spoke English in a Thai backwater town. Maybe the newspaper belonged to the Canadian
