Took a 2 day trip to Udon Thani to see a student that I sponser and her family. Quite a different experience in that when you land you are the only airplane at the airport......same situation when you leave. Stayed at the Udon hotel (wondered how they came up with that name for the hotel but couldn't decide). Obviously a luxury hotel during the Vietnam days but that was long ago. Still acceptable but a little worn. After doing all the visiting I began to look around for some action. Next door was a massage place with a bunch of Thai guys dressed like chicago pimps running around. Nice ladies. Fishbowl 1,000 baht, top line models 1,700. No ups all services. Had a beer and left to see what else was around. At the hotel next door they had 2 hours of massage for 250 baht. Went for it but the girl I picked was Laoian and could not speak english at all. She was willing to come to my room but nothing at the massage. Walked around and ran into an alley with a lot of ladies hanging around. Some pretty nice. Very little English and an asking price of 200 baht (to embarrassed to negotiate anything lower). All in all a nice little city but if you speak some Thai it is helpful.

casey, been to udon several times, as a matter of fact I have a g/f that lives there. you are right about only one plane at the airport, then again the airport there is not very big.I also stayed at the same hotel, and been to that massage parlor. there is another one about a 5 min walk from there it is near the big park, situated in an alley behind a 7-11.last time I was there the going rate was 1400bht. that was in june this year.

one other thing bro there is a real nice hotel called the Nepali, it is about 5 min drive from airport, the going rate was 750bht a night. if you go back and want to check that one out just look for there hotel shuttle. also there is a hotel right outside the airport, I believe it is called sleep in. very nice they charge 550bht a night.

Definitely sounds interesting, I took a week off around the end of November and drive up to Khorat and Khon Kean through Kao Yai park. I can recommend this drive if anyone is tinerested. I enjoyed the trip to both places, but that is for another thread not this one.

You guys are right about the airport being slow these days but when I was stationed at Udon in 1969, it was rated most of that year as the busiest airfield in the world. And by "airfield" that meant commercial airports also. There were USAF, Thai Air Force, Lao Air Force, Air America planes taking off continuosly to drop bombs in N Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. Even commercial Thai Airways planes used the field. THOSE WERE THE DAYS MY FRIEND

expat 69, I saw the movie about Air America (w/Mel Gibson) and picked up the book in March this year at the airport in BKK. The movie was given a bad rating there and apparently some of those who were involved are upset with the author for authenticity. However, from the outside the book was a great read about what went on and was financed. Thailand almost as the 53rd state and CIA running logistics operations to fund their ventures. Any views? (This actually leads into another Thread I have been muling on starting for a while: The history in the making of Thailand/BKK as it is now - there is an awfull lot og knowledge, stories and experience amogst you guys out there. Mine goes back to Singapore and discussions I had with my father in law at the time - about the Japanese bombing of it , however, that is for another day.)

Slojo: The town has changed drastically since the Air Force and Air America left in the mid-70's. I left there in 1/70 and did not return until 10/99. When I left in 1970, there were bars and massage parlors all over town. Now there are very few. In 1969, just about all of the locals could speak some English and most of the bargirls and masseuses could speak English pretty good. Now, it is difficult to find many Thais in Udon who can speak much English. There were 2 or 3 movie theatres showing American movies-now the only theatre that I know of is in the Charoen-Sri Grand Shopping Mall. No KFCs or 7-11's back in 1969-now there is a KFC and there are 7-11's all over Udon. In 1969, there were taxies all over town-now, taxies are outlawed in Udon. In 1969-I knew Udon like I knew the back of my hand-nowdays it is hard for me to find my way around in Udon.

Unfortunately in the hey days of Udon Thani I was stuck in DaNang watching the war. I'll bet Udon was a rocking place. Now it is sleepy and not to westernized....I liked it but think I would be bored living there unless the girl was real special.
