Chiang Mai is a totally different experience from other places in Thailand. Personally I love it. If you are looking for primarily for thai P4P scene only then BKK/pataya would be superior locations. Chiang Mai, however is a delight. I would recommend it highly

Kev, I second that and like I have said before, outside Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket you will not neccesarily get everything served on a plate. This often makes it more a challange. My most pleasant and rewarding experiences in Thailand have always been "in the middle of nowhere" and not in Nana or its kinds.
Maybe this is just me, whatever

the mozzies here can like on the coastal pattaya cause illnes if near stagnate water.....but if you like paler chicks there are more here....BUT also note my thai wife tells me to NEVER BUTTERFLY ON ME especially in chang mai.... appearntly the HIV rate in thai men and woman is porportionately high.... and unlike bars in bangkok it can be a bigger factor..... (her info comes from her knowledge of girls from there and their HIV status.

I do believe that it was printed somewhere a couple years back about the statistics of the HIV rates of the major cities:
Chang Mai was #1 in HIV per capita
Rayong was #2
Pattaya was #3
Bangkok was #4
This is just from memory, but I am pretty sure this holds true.

Your statistics might be correct, it is just that I am not sure how to interpretate these.
For example an HIV positive Thai living and working in Bangkok but originally from Chiang Mai province and still registered there is probably counted as a Chiang Mai HIV positive person. Does this make Chiang Mai very "positive", I am not sure.
My "unscientific" impression is that Chiang Mai owns its high HIV infection rate not from the city itself but from the surounding more remote villages and hilltribes.
Anyway always practise safe sex, everywhere.

I think that you're correct about Chiang Mai province HIV rates being the highest in LOS.
There are two main reasons for this:
1> Thais' equate fair skin with beauty. The ladies from Chiang Mai / Chiang Rai are lighter skinned than women from other parts of LOS. Therefore there is more demand for sex related activities from ladies of these areas, which translates into more of these ladies becoming sex workers , which results in more such ladies getting infected with HIV.
2> The Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai rural areas are perhaps the second poorest in LOS -second only to Isaan.
Which makes ladies from these areas prime candidates for the sex trade & also for HIV infection.

Bangkok accounts for only 10 percent of the reported HIV cases in Thailand, according to the country's Public Health Ministry. If this seems like an insignificant statistic at first, consider that of Thailand's 60 million people, perhaps between 12 and 15 million of them live in the greater Bangkok area. That means what amounts to about 20 percent of Thailand's population has only 10 percent of the cases. Bangkok, for all its notoriety of being the sex death capital of the world, is perhaps a whopping 30 or 40 times larger than Thailand's second biggest city--Chiang Mai in the north. Nearly 55 percent of all reported HIV cases in Thailand have been found in the six northern provinces, including Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. The area has the highest concentration of HIV-infected people in Thailand. And it is in these provinces where the disease is spreading most rapidly.
