I've previously used first class, second class fan, and second class air con on the Bkk to Surat Thani line. All were overnight sleepers.
If you want privacy with your TGF then first class is the way to go, doesn't cost that much extra. And first class is quiet compared to second class.
I found both second class air con and second class fan to be good modes of transport, slept well in both.
Second class fan is noisy because all the windows are wide open, however these are shut at night which makes sleeping ok.
For the few extra bucks I'd take the air con anytime. The only reason I took the fan last time was because I booked the day before and all the air con seats were taken.
Book as early as possible to avoid dissapointment. And make sure you get the fare that covers the full journey to Samui, i.e. train, bus, boat.
