I was in Hua Hin last week, a few days after New Year's, and have to say compared to Bangkok and Pattaya, it's a lot less bustling and the girls are not as pretty or as cosmopolitan. Basically, do not go there for the girls. The beach itself is not bad, but nothing to brag about especially when compared to those on the islands. There are many farang there too.
As for the girls, I stayed in a guesthouse on Soi Bintaban and stopped by every bar. Most of the women are in their mid to late 20s or lower 30s and I could not find many lookers. There is one in Toro Bar not bad and I BFed one from Celtic, only 22, and rather cute. She did not kiss or smoke though. The best looking one I found was in Octopussy, only 20, and very cute and skinny. Unfortunately the night I was with her she was trashed and was no good for me at all.
I only paid 1000 LT both times and both girls were content.
Hua Hin though generally is more laid-back than Pattaya and Bangkok but to me, a bit boring too.

I suppose the nightlife is dull compared to Pattaya and Bangkok, but you can still have a good time there. As you said, it's very laid back, and never very busy.
Lovely restaurants thereas well.
The food in Chao Lai restaurant, on the pier, is absolutely out-of-this-world, and damn cheap as well. I had a feast there with a girl which came to about 1000 baht, with 3 caraffes of wine.

Chao Lei....now you are talking....of course it was menat to be demolished on June 1st 2003....as are all the business 'encroaching' on the sea.
Did you notice the photo of Thaksin when he ate there, it's in the booth on the right hand side as you walk on the upper level.

It's nice to meet someone else who's actually been to Hua Hin.
Do you know if all the pier restaurants still there? Or has some of them been demolished?
I'd be well upset if I get there to find a big open space, where my favourite restaurant once stood.....
