Thor's was there last fall when I was on Koh Chang. Wouldn't call it a Palace, though. Thor is interesting. Great food there too.

Have a gander at the Amari Emerald Cove Resort on Koh Chang, just opened last year. But be warned it runs about 8000 baht per night during high season.

So, I took my 6 day trip to Koh Chang a few weeks ago and had an excellent time. Sorry, brethren, I don't have much of a field report on the mongering scene as I was with TGF the whole time, but I did find there were plenty of bars in Hat Sai Kao and Kai Bae with girls floating around, but not a lot of them and the quality fairly average. There were a lot of farangs with girls in their arms, and I assume they came together to the island.

For my hotel I decided to splurge and not take any risks (see sidebar) so we stayed in the Tropicana Resort, which was very nice. I booked through sawadee.com and paid about 4850 Baht a night. We had a deluxe bungalow with outside shower and bath (inside shower as well), and plenty of room to move around. The room was excellent. The gardens were beautiful, the staff friendly, the pool was very nice, and the beach great. The Thai food was quite good, but the farang food wasn't. The breakfast was also good. I recommend this place highly if you are looking for a very nice place to stay.

[Sidebar: A few years ago I took my first Thai girlfriend to Koh Samui and I lucked out on the accommodations. We stayed at Samui Yacht Club, which I highly recommend if you want a quiet and romantic place to hang out. It is between Chaweng and Lamai in a little cove, so it is not the place to cruise from, but if you want to enjoy some together time with your TGF the place is great. The next trip we went to Phuket, and I found a place on the Internet (Nai Yang Beach Resort) that looked similar: Quiet part of the island, bungalows, beach, but the place wasn't so great. The hotel was friendly, but the beach was very dirty, little shacks were between the bungalows and the beach, and some of the places blared loud music all day and night. TGF commented that it reminded her of Bangkok -- ouch! To make matters worse, there was a cemetery behind the place which gave TGF the creeps. The place did not go over well.]

The Tropicana is fairly upscale, but there weren't many Thais at all, and the farangs were a bit on the older side. I didn't make friends with anyone there, they weren't my type, but who cares, I was with my TGF and she supplied very sufficient company. On the main road, which is a short walk from the hotel, there were plenty of stores, bars, and restaurants with people with whom I could relate. Nid's had good food, and the bar across from Nid's was a friendly place.

Kai Bae seemed like an interesting area to stay, less crowded than Hat Sai Kao, but I never saw the beach so I can’t comment on that. The area seemed laid back and more down home Thai style than Hat Sai Kao. Hat Sai Kao seemed to have a lot of decent places to sleep, hang out, swim, and eat. The food I ate there at a few various places was good. We never went to any of the bigger places to eat, but just to the small places and the street carts near the beach.

One final note: We took a snorkeling trip that stopped at Koh Wai, and that island seemed like a very nice place to escape from it all. TGF really wants to spend some time together there. I imagine many of the islands around there are similar. So, check out Koh Chang, have fun, don’t forget the sunblock, and have a good time. There’s a lot of fun to be had there…
