Thanks. Did not look at the date. These threads that continue after a year gap always get me.

Anyways, was at the Sofitel in April 2004 and had a great time. It probably has not changed a bit in a year.

Ok, after a little research I will be staying at chareonsri grand in Udon for 1125bht via http://www.planetholiday.com/hotel/44921.htm?session=lDUZAs5y4ycwrGWaLKVqW1s03A#HotelFacilities

In Khon Kaen, the kaen Inn and Khon Kaen hotel seem to be decent and the best value at 500bht and the sofitel doesn't really seem worth paying 3x this amount. I'll be in both locations for a couple of days each in Oct and will report back.

Sorry to disagree with you. Sofitel in KK at US$45/night is the best/cheapest 4-star hotel I've ever seen (and I've been to places, in/outside of Thailand!). And it does make a difference!
In Udon, the Kirin Hotel is not a bad choice, at approx. 800 THB, clean and relatively new, close to action (Mr Tong,, etc.)

Agreed, I would stay at sofitel if I was on a short 1-2 week trip to Thailand but since I will be travelling a few months my preference will be for the khon kaen hotel to save a bit of money.
