I went to that beach in April or May. There were only a few boats there then, and it was beautiful. The tour guide told us about some of the trees being cut down, etc. for the movie, but it still had the finest, cleanest sand of any beach that we stopped at. The water was perfect for snorkeling! I saw a school of several hundred fish that was really fun to watch.
The waterfall in the movie is actually located inside Khao Yai National Park, in Korat. I saw it back in January or February, can't remember. It was pretty dry, but my photos of the area match the movie.
If you rent it, be sure to watch the "extras" on the DVD. I found the alternate opening scene to be much more realistic of Bangkok.
In 100 days there over the last year (7 trips) I have only had one idiot who tried to keep me from walking away. He was collecting peope's names, addresses, passport #, etc. I think the TAT finally removed him from the street.
I agree with most of the others about illegal drugs. Granted, you probably won't get caught, but don't cry if you do, because the warnings are here, there and everywhere. A Thai jail cannot be fun.

The beach that was shown in that movie was on Phi Phi
island.It was completly devastated by the Tsunami. It may take years for it to get back to normal. It had tons of beach front bungallows so it had a much bigger body count than Patong beach. Next to Kho Lak it had the greatest number of fatalities. Much of the hotels are destroyed
If you like that kind of beach and want the experience it waish a lady simply go to Krabi Au Nang. For the lady go to Krabi town and check out a Karoke bar called The TIGER BAR.Or better yet plan a day trip from Phuket and
bring along a your bar fine.
