Woody, you must have been unlucky, or gone on a bad-night, or something.
I go to the Sofitel disco often and always get jumped on. It is not as popular as the Charoen Thani's disco, but there seems to be a higher-freelancer ratio at the Sofitel.
Also you guys should check out the Filipino hotties who sing at the bar on the ground floor of Sofitel.

Freelancer rates seem to be the same as elsewhere in Thailand. Many of the customers are Asians and they probably get better deals.
I stick to standard BKK prices, paying 1000 for ST, 1500-2000 for LT.
If you want a guaranteed FL pick-up then it is hard to fail at Sofitel, at Charoen Thani's disco there are many girls but less working-girls, and at Times Square it is mostly students, who are available if you're charming/friendly enough (and if you're lucky enough to meet the slutty ones).
Speaking good Thai or Issan helps a lot in KK.

No, not at all. I was just only farang there and the bartender politely asked me to leave after I finished my drink. I was just sitting quietly.
I talked to another farang on the flight back, who was there with his half-thai son, that also said he was refused service in a bar. I did get service at the other places I went however, Violin Karaoke and the Coyote Ugly-type bar across the street from it. This was last June, and there seemed to be very few farangs around, except in the hotel.

Interesting- being asked to leave and all! Certainly hope my experience there turns out to be different. I'm a day away from exploring this area myself. With the selfless interests of the brotherhood in mind I shall post myself at the bar and pose as a single, well dressed punter and see what transpires.
Anyone else have any last minute tips for Skip doing the Khon Kaen scene?

Both those places have closed now.
There is a little Farang bar called Eric's (I think) for Farang who are scared to go anywhere else, contains the usual losers, but you may be able to get some (bad) advice from the no-doubt bitter expats there.
I'd advise Skip to just hang out at Softitel and Charoen Thani's discos. Don't worry you won't be ask to leave, even if you behave badly and dress badly.
They don't get busy till late though so if you go too early you'll be all alone.

Advice taken, Swordsman. Many thanks! I just completed the 'farang' circuit in Udon Thani hoping for some nice encounters and was instead a bit taken aback by the aura of 'loser' that seemed to pervade the farang haunts there. I did instead wonder about- alone- though it did appear to me that most of the farang out and about were lone wolf types as well. Some bit of irony was not lost on me.
Just booked the Sofitel Khon Kaen for three nights. Yippee! If the town/scene is a good as the reports i'm reading here I might mosey over to the Charoen for another three day stint there also. Hope to pass on Eric's per your advise.

To be honest, three days is probably enough.
I like to visit regularly but rarely stay long. Kohn Kaen is one of those places where you'll have fun at night but often the days can be a little boring.
Aside from swimming pools, restaurants, internet cafes, afternoon sex and shopping there isn't a great deal to do during daylight hours. Don't worry if you oversleep.
Actually, that's quite a lot of good daytime stuff I've just mentioned.
Sofitel is a cool hotel.

Yes, the Sofitel is a good hotel. I'd be willing to give this town another try sometime. Not familar with Eric's, but some farangs hang out in a bar/restaurant called Number 1 Bar. Just a small place with a few pool tables, food's OK. I believe one of the thai girls working there is the owner's wife, so be careful who you hit on.
Lots of beautiful university girls around but, unfortunately, I don't speak much thai.
