Gus, I have been to both and as you say same same but different...obviously Ko Chang is a hell of alot bigger. I may be biased as Ko Chang is my favorite island in Thailand and I lived on Phuket and did business on samui, krabi, and phi phi pre-tsunami days. It is becoming more and more developed and I think my love for it may be because of 1st 2nd impressions from 2002 and 2003..my last trip was early 2004 and the 7 11's had emrged along with high end hotel projects, but it was still my favorite. they even have beer bars with very "doable" girls 6's 7's and an 8 here and there could be located, back then 1000 LT was generous but it is probably gone up. ko tao is great dont get me wrong but IMHO ko chang is more beautiful, offers more, and can be as relaxing as ko tao....however, I have not been to ko tao since 2003 so it may of changed alot as well.... I would give my left pinkie finger to be on either one at this moment as I sit here at work in the US LOL! have fun mate, atl

I haven't been to Koh Tao but I have been to Koh Chang. I know I'd take Koh Chang over Koh Samet anyday. Only shitty thing is it's distance. But then again I went in January this year so I didn't experience the rain LKOL did. I've seen pictures and heard about that though.

Koh Chang is still a great destination, but it is changing rapidly. The season on KC is relatively short as it is considered one of the wetter places in Thailand. Its best from mid november till end of feb.Though you can be lucky a month either side of that.

I like beaches and sunset. Have been thinking of a side trip from BKk to a beach resort. I suppose the beaches in Koh Chang are at least reasonably good and there are plenty of water sports activities available. Do they offer the 'dining on the beach' thing ? I very much enjoy dining under the moon with the tropical sea breeze. How did you guys travel there from BKK to Trat ? I've been to Koh Samet once and paid 2000 B for taxi ride to the pier. I reckon it may be 3000 B taxi fare for the 4.5-5.0 hour trip to Trat. Is bus service a convenient way to go ? Anyway thanks you guys for sharing the experience here. knowntender

Unfortunately, I think Bangkok Air has a monopoly going again. They are the only outside airline carrier that fly's to Trat. Not sure about any local carriers but for Bangkok Air their f***in one way is like 4400 THB after tax's. http://www.bangkokair.com/

Can I assume traveling time from Sukhumvit hotel to the pier and total transportation cost for 2 persons in a return trip as follows ? Bus min 6.0 hours, 1,400 B, give or take 300B Taxi min 4.5 hours, 6,000 B, give or take 500B Air min 3.0 hours, 9,500B, give or take 300B ( including cab fare to Don Muang or new airport and then taxi ride to the pier ). How did you guys travel in your trip ? I contemplate to mix it up to lessen the hardship --- road transport to the pier, air transport back to BKK.
