Really, this IS funny.
All you really need do is get away from Sukhumvit/Silom Rd., and to the suburbs to see what the MAJORITY of Thais live like. Traveling to little villages will put you to sleep, especially if you don't speak Thai.
Becoming part of the scene is the ONLY way you'll ever know what is going on in a small town/village. Visiting touristy stuff upcountry isn't much different from the stuff in Bangkok, just a slower pace.
Take the Subway out to Ladprao, hop a local bus, get off and walk around.
I guess if you like the real back country, you could get someone to drive you around some rice fields, but it really ain't tour bus stuff that will teach you about how Thais live. Learning to live at their pace, and speaking the language will.
As for safety, if you don't act the fool, you're safer ANYWHERE in Thailand than you would be in almost ANY big city in the West. Well, excepting maybe Pattaya...
