Anyone know how to get to the Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum by public transport from Bangkok. Read an article about it and it now has me interested.

By train (from Hualamphong Central Station) or bus (Southern Bus station).

After you arrive in kanchanaburi make youer own arrangements. Usually many tuk tuks (or similar) drivers who want to show you around or a fixed fee.

They usually take you to the Museum, Burial Grounds and the Bridge.

Current prices? No idea. Around 300-400 baht half a day plus entry fees of a couple of baht.

If you want to go further than Khan you might see if the special tourist train on Saturday (from Hualamphong) is still running. Takes you over the pass to the waterfall (Erawan Falls).

Boy - Hellfire Pass is actually further up the Kwar Noi Valley (70 km from Kanchanaburi) and not normally included in any one day tours out of Bangkok (it is just too far). Hellfire Pass is the site of a museum run by the Australian War Graves Commission and preserves several kilometres of line as a walking trail. It is also the final resting place of the ashes of "Weary" Dunlop.

Basically its a day trip from Kanchanaburi and most hotels will arrange a car and driver for you for around 1500 baht. Yes there would be public transport, local bus going past on the main road but I don't know any details about those.

Minder,

Yes thats the museum I want to visit and then take a 4.5 km hike down the trail including Hellfire pass.
I think I will get a driver for the day as I don't want to be lost out there.

You can arrange trips from any hotel, guesthouse etc for about THB800 includes lunch, other attractions and lasts all day... no need to fork out for a driver etc.

SC are you talking about River Kwai Kanchanaburi or Hellfire Pass "Konyu Cutting" Kwar Noi Valley, they are two very different places?

Boy - Even if that is correct I'd still spend the extra and get a vehicle and driver. Lots more flexability. Also the walking track is one-way so you go to the end and then double back over the same ground - it can be quite a hike in the hot weather. How anyone survived slave labour, starvation and disease in such conditions is incredible.

If the vehicle is a small 4wd or if the cross track is dry enough you can get the driver to drop you at a track that crosses the actual walking trail - then you only have to double back over part of the walking trail.

The curator at the museum (ex-Australian army) can give your driver directions to do this.

Hellfire Pass Memorial Project

The Japanese Army built a railway from Moulmein in Burma to Ban Pong in Thailand between June 1942 and December 1943 using prisoners-of-war and impressed Asian labourers. Of the 60 000 Allied prisoners who worked on the railway, more than 12 000, including 2700 Australians, died of disease, ill treatment, malnutrition and exhaustion. Hellfire Pass was the name given to Konyu Cutting where open fires were used to light the "night shift" during a period known as Speedo which saw frenetic activity day and night to put the construction schedule back on time.

Lest We Forget.
