CG probably should answer you there since he went way more than me, or one of the older members that posted above. I can't give you much info in the area of staying with a family since I only stayed at Saikaew Beach resort. I just really like the location of Saikaew Beach, cause one of the main town's are really close and the beach there is one of the nicer I've read on travel sites.

I've USTFSE quite a bit for the past 20 minutes and I'm unable to find the answer to my question. Has anyone stayed in the deluxe or beachfront bugalows at saikaew beach resort? what is the difference besides the obvious?

bkkmaster, those two rooms are the same on the inside, the only diff. is that the beachfront rooms are right on the beach.
The beach in front of this hotel is busy.
isaanking, I see no reason not to bring a family to Samed Villa.

 thanks, it's too difficult to tell from pictures I have seen on websites. I have stayed there two times however only in the superior rooms. I didn't look in to Samed Villa, although I should've read that part of your recommendation much better as that hotel looks very nice especially for that price. Just wish I found it earlier.

The last time I went I stayed at the Mailibu resort in Ao Wong Duern - the room had air conditioning, and a t.v., and the resort had a swimming pool (which I wanted). I recall it was when the Y2K thing was going on and at that time this seemed to be the only resort on Ao Wong Duern with a swimming pool. Although this thread is an old one I still recall Ao Wong Duern as a great place to relax for a few days when Pattaya gets too much.
On one trip to Ao Wong Deurn my friend and I hired a speed boat for a day (from someone on the beach) and took a tour all around Samet island stopping off at various beaches for food and drinks. It was a couple of thousand baht well spent. After seeing some of the other beaches and what they offered in the way of restaurants and bars my feeling at the time was that I had made the right choice for me.

The Samed Villa resort was nice, however I found that they seemed to have a pretty bad mosquito problem. That's why everyone seemed to migrate to Silversands Resort to eat dinner and what not. Vong Duan I like but the roads are really hammered and it is quite far from everything. Nicest most secluded resort with a very very nice private beach is Sametville resort. Paradee resort forget it, I saw it and it is way overpriced and way to far from everything and the road is almost undriveable there. My friend and I were on quads so that helped but I would never stay there. Actually I checked Silversands since I had to walk through there everytime I went to Samed Villa, the landscaping is excellent and actually cheaper Samed Villa but I didn't physicall check the rooms but they are individual so that is really nice although they were stupid in deciding to put a really noisy ass club in the restaurant area, plus you don't need to rent some expensive speed boat from Rayong/Ban Phe to Koh Samet just take the normal cheap ferry and the taxi will be able to drive right up to the Silversands intersection.

OK, my 50 cents:
My first visit to Koh Samet I stayed in Samed Villa. Real good and modern air condition rooms. But their "right at the beach location" is somewhat misleading, as most of their condos are located in the jungle, hardly seing much of the sea. Luckily, th e mosquitos do not like me!
I liked it, though, but if anyone can post any experience on the white condos that are located right on the same beach, they may be my next choice.

If Alt made it to this thread then I think the beach you are looking for is Ao Prao on the west coast. It's the beach the speed boat goes to from the mainland. Great sunsets, and real relaxing. Basically what you described.
I stayed at the Lima Coco right on the beach.
