Well - I am soon in for a visit to Udon since my GF since almost 2 years live there and it is about time to find out what her heritage is! We have always travelled to other places and I realise that is pretty dumb - or have I just been reluctant of meeting her folks.... Guess she can show me a lot of her hometown and I look forward to it! Perhaps no chance of "free enterprise" - but it really is not important. I get more than I can ask for from my dear girl. However I have to find out where to stay. A top hotel is a must and internet hookup more than essential. Any tips? Thanks!

Very upmarket, 1300>5000b night.
About 3-4 mins by car to the centre of Udon. Or as in my previous post Charoensri Grand Royal Hotel in the centre of town. If money is no problem, I suggest the Ban Chiang Hotel. Nice bar's, lounge's and restaurant. I am sure they would have I/Net, just gotta ask.

Thanks Barrafish! My ordeal is now down to 2 names: Ban Chiang or Charoensri Grand Royal Hotel...... really hard to choose based on just the internet info. Asked GF today on the phone which one she prefer --- but she had never stayed in either so that was not much help!
Anyone know if either of these have internet hookup in room?? That will probably help me decide.

I was in Udonthani about a year ago, so my information is based on that trip. The Charoensri Grand Royal is comparable to a 5 star hotel in the USA. It has all the amenities one would expect from a deluxe hotel. The breakfast buffet in their restaurant is free with the room and loaded with well-presented and tasty western and Thai food. Next door is the shopping mall and across the street is an internet shop. I really can't remember if internet hook-up was available in the room.
Maybe you already have all of that information.
My first impression upon exiting the airplane on the tarmac was FRESH AIR! Such a different feel and smell than Bangkok. I like Udonthani!
QuackQuack: I DID take the tuk tuk driver up on his offer for a girl for 500 baht. He wanted to take me somewhere to see them. I declined and told him to pick 2-3 and bring them to me. He said, "ok, 15 minute." I waited at that same place for 15 minutes and, sure enough, he came back. He had 2 girls with him. One was a 6 in my estimation and one was a 5. When I asked them "tao rai, khrap?" the 5 girl said "1000 baht." Then, there was a strained discussion, mostly in Thai, how he was confused on the price. At every lull in the conversation, the 5 girl would say over and over, "mistUH, you want laedEE? misTUH, you want laedEE?" She seemed so hardened and rough. I tried a compromise amount, but to no avail. I was pretty neutral on the whole deal; little did the 5 girl know that she was not my first choice anyway, so she might as well lighten up a bit. I gave the tuk tuk driver a few baht for his time (probably not necessary, he really looked surprised, but HEY! I was in Udonthani!) As they tuk tukked away, the 5 girl was still shouting, "mistUH, you want laeDEE?" mistUH, you want laeDEE?"

Just a little advice on Top Mansion. This is a convenient location in the town, but has a couple of drawback's that may not suit some people.
If you are staying on the western side of the hotel, you will hear the local Thai nightclub (disco) operating till 2am or a bit later, and very loud. If that is not bad enough, some of the mattresses are made of soft concrete, f***en very hard if you like a medium to soft bed. So I have switched apartment's and now staying in an apartment complex attached to one of the local hospital's. It is a large hosp. and alway's running into nurse's, there are a few here and also live in the complex.
The MP place QQ told you about is attached to Charoensri Palace Hotel, 60 Phosri Rd, UT. The girls speak little English and some are as good looking or better than in BKK or Pattaya IMO. I have been with one for the past 4 day's and she suit's me. You hardly see any farang's in this place and the girl's say farang's are far and few between, great.

I have the card in front of me, on the left is Oscar massage and next to it is Charoensri Palace Hotel and they are physically connected.
Charoensri Grand Royal Hotel is connected to Robinson store. That complex is otherwise known locally as Compac or similar. And it does cost 40-50b from this location to Oscar massage/Charoensri P.H. and or Ban Chiang Hotel. Ban Chiang Hotel is about a 2-3 minute walk from Oscar and Charoensri Palace Hotel.
There is only one Oscar massage from what I have found out and not many of the local expat's know of it and me being a prick, have not told them, but will tell you mate.

Stayed at the Charoensri Grand Royal Hotel for 1600 baht a night with breakfast about a year ago. Nice hotel and having the mall next door was great. There were a few bars across from the mall, looked in and the talent was very limited.
Can't remember the hotel, but only a 10 minute ride from Charoensri. It had the massage parlor downstairs, soapy place across the parking lot, large beer garden and karaoke place next door. Was with the girlfriend and family doing the karaoke bit, so didn't check prices (soapy/massage). Did note that the waitresses working the karaoke place were cute and assuming open for P4P.............assuming!!!!
Did hit a strip joint with girlfriend with our driver tagging along, not really a strip joint more a bikini go-go. Talent was limited with only 6 girls dancing and only 1 that was an 8 the rest were a mixture of 5-6.
The hotel with Mambo Disco isn't bad, though can't remember the name of it. 4-5 star hotel and about a 20 minute baht bus ride from the mall. Lobby bar made some strong JD and cokes, need a few after shopping with the family and girlfriend watching a wedding at the hotel.

Am in Udon now for the first visit and it is really a different experience! Not negative at all - but of course much more laidback than BKK or elsewhere where more of the "scene" is available. Went here for 2 reasons. To work and meet GF. Really nice to see her birthplace and her showing me around. But I did not expect what happened next. GF parents had a leaking roof on their house and I decided to fund a new one. Not expensive as such but of course they were happy. So happy that dear dad started to work around the clock to finish it. Also when it was raining! And of course the obvoius happend. He slipped and fell down and hurt his hip. Nothing broken it seems but really bruised up! So now GF is watching over him in hospital and I´m alone at night! Maybe should have stayed out of roof donations! No - of course they needed it and happy to have made it possible.
Ended up staying at Irish Clock - a small place with a clear european touch. As soon as one gets out of comparing it with Westin or Solitaire in BKK - you start appreciating it! Nice and ok comfy with working internet wireless in the pub. Signal too weak in room. But no probs really - just walk down to the bar - hook up and order a Guiness and something to eat! Very laidback and you soon realise this is really a place for longtime ex-pats as you see and hear so many falang speak thai.... I am envious! My few words and sentences doesn´t go far compared with these guys! Wished it was me.
And a BIG warning! Do NOT eay at a restaurant near the big mall! It is called "Bella Italia" I think and has many signs outside. Just about one of the worst eating experiences I have had in Thailand! Stay away for pits sake!
Since alone I walked to the little bar street behind Mr Tonys and the others. Very little action but actually saw some really nice faces! Sat in a bar for a while where a little cutie danced around with an absolutely amazing little body. Her friend had a beautiful face and really a figure to wish for with one of the nicest racks I have seen in a very long time! My GF has a marvellous big pairs herself but this one was almost even better! Was very tempting but not the right time since GF will join later!
Looking forward to explore more of this town and post my findings!

That would be that Napalai Hotel.
Great little place with a neat pool, great views from the upper rooms, and at 1000 Baht and less, inexpensive. I generally stay there.
