Since you probably arrived at this thread searching NongKhai, I'll say something generally. For p4p, just look around, down on the main inner drag where the Danish place is. You'll see some little hosted bars and cafes. Sometimes you'll run into them in other part of town. If it looks like a duck, walkks like a duck...
The Meeting place is a funky guest house/restaraunt/beer pub populated by grey-and-greyer European ex-pats. The TGs there are 6s-8s. They are as nice as could be to the big lugs there as well as the cool customers. Seems like a long-term hangout for some there. All the TGs work hard and sell anything on and off the menu you want to buy. There's a barfine. Have a beer and a shag.
During the day the ex-pats drink. At night they are drunker, yelling and arguing till dawn while while on weekend nights loud classic rock shakes the working class Thai neighborhood. So you won't get much sleep, if that matters. Treat the TGs nice!!! They usually don't do this because they love it, though they may love being with you.
No info on Alan.

I'm interested in Nong Khai. Will probably take a trip up there in March to survey the housing market. How about a house right on the river?I'm kind of looking for a very quiet and friendly place where I can settle down again.
Tell me should I bring an Issan sweetie up from BBK with me or are there lots of potential companions around? I especially like school teachers. Also I want to visit Laos again (first time since early 70's).

I wheeled into this town last night. Staying at the Grand Hotel (two more nights to go). Man-o-man! Staff has the poorest English speaking skills of any hotel I have yet to encounter here.
Went for an early evenings massage. Decided the talent was too poor to risk an in-room jumping into the hay thingy so asked for a one hour TTM to be followed by an hour oily. Mis-communuication ensues with the old battle axe running the show over pricing and service. Confusion reigns... I back off Thai/Oily combo. Then, I get quoted one hour oily=400baht vs. two hour oily=400baht. Up to you. Hmm..seems I'm going for two. Then, quick as a jiffy before you can say, "I'll take that one!" I was assigned a Thai version of the 'Swede Olga' - a dour brute, devoid of smiles. 
Turns out the oily is a bit novel for these rural outposts -you can tell it in the aimlessness of Olga's hands- and loo, the oily gradually evolves into a TTM.
Well, I kid you not, when I was on my back in the final stretches of this ordeal, with the head resting on a pillow in her lap, her mammaries nearly smothered my head. Seriously- room lights kept going out, hair was getting all static clingy- a veritable mushy mess of mammary massage it became at that point. Lordy! Relasing under circumstances such as these is impossible, why inside my head it's looking more like-
Get me outta there! Don't wanna even think what it woulda been like had I allowed her in me room. 
Popped into the Karaoke but decided to give it a miss. Slipped out to a Som Law on the main drag and told the driver, "Sexy Lady!" Off we go, up the block and around the corner. Two guys on mats out front of a little house musta shouted out the Thai equivalent of 'Sorry, fresh out of lady tonight. Try Jebs place.' cause we didn't even break throttle and were motoring on. Past the backside of the hotel and round another corner and we pull up to what appears as an abandoned 2-storey appartment block. A bit apprehensive, I am. Last apartment is lit up with what could be a squatter and all else is darkended. Screw it! I got the faith.
Stick a timid head into the doorway and see the handler/pimp and two gals on a mattress- one not worth a second glance, and one angelic. This guys English is better than most of the hotel staffs. 500b/1 hr ST or 1500b LT take your pick. A no brainer for this romantic punter. Thoughts of candlelit bathing dance in my head as I try for a 1000b LT, and counter with 1200b LT while he stays firm. Can't blame him, either, she was everything you'd want.
Back in the room I take it real slow to intimate the GFE and build trust. Worked too, to an extent, and I drew her a bath and let her enjoy it in private. She later ended up giving me an unhurried and superlative TTM from head to toe. About 6 words of common knowledge were possessed by us. Much gesticulations and frustrations later I discover she is Lao- now her stunning and lovely high cheeks hit home- and earning money for her extended family- still not clear if it were for Mom or sis- which she proceeds to show me pics of on the mobile. Adorable twins plus three more little ones. Damn! I'm feeling so softened in the heart I don't wanna bang her. Got her all night, I say to myself. Why not get some rest and have a bang in the AM. Proceeded to turn out the lights only to be tapped on the shoulder for sanuk.
The long and short of it was- she was set to hustle her baht over to Laos just as soon as my seed was spent. It all fell into place after I tiddyed up the condom thingy and she made a run for the door with a still angelic smile on that face. 
And what a grand illusion it was..... 
Back to reality- I'm seriously bored in this town today. Reading the travel books last week, they seriously put down Udon Thani as a town not worth a bother, but I would beg to differ. Udon has a ton going for it compared to what I seen here so far.

Skip pretty much the same experience I had there, the pretty girls seem to be laos, there are a lot of fallang bar/restaurant places opening up but my luck was in the clubs, but as with all towns these open and close rather quickly, thai business school methods.
Keep posting funny.
Oldtimer, well culturally not much !, got a whacky indian/khmer temple (wat kherk).
all in all it's a sleepy town with not much to do, if that's what you like.
Udon is down the road which as a lot more to offer in the way of action.
Commercialy the guys selling building products to the laos people are doing very well, the others scraping a living.

A long time dead this thread, so a brief update before I head out for another look around.
Oldtimer & other's interested......Guage this. An aussie bloke is leasing a 2 storey building overlooking the Mekong River in fact nearly right on it. Not quite the centre of Nong Khai, just off the main street's. Downstairs is a nice small bar/ restaurant with seating for about 30-40 people inside, and a few table's and chair's out the front on the footpath, roughly twice the size of Eden Club in BKK. It is large enough to employ 3-4 TG's as waitressess, plenty of room. Two large room's upstair's for living and a bathroom. You do not have to run it as a restaurant, just pay the lease of around 3200b month. That is cheap and from what I have seen and been told, it is very cheap to live up here, food etc and Lao beer.
The Meeting Place is still operating. The current owner's (English I believe) also have a place in Pattaya. Allan Patterson, don't know, but will eventually find out.
A brothel operate's with LG's not far from the market's, a genuine brothel, no pool table's, bar, just upstair's room's for bonking, 500b ST and 100 for room. Girl's around 4-5 scale and not old. PM me for location.
A lot of bar's around this place, TMP would probably be the biggest. Has genuine aussie BBQ's outside, a pool table, plenty of room inside and outside and you could stand on grass and have a few beer's. This place can be hard to find and will give location when I have a bit more time. Friendly people taking care of the place also and btw, only English, Italian and Oz/US food, no Thai food at all in TMP and they are currently upgrading the kitchen under the direction of the Italian cook.
It's a laid back place, friendly people, cooler weather and cheap all round for great Thai, Lao, Vietnamese and Malay food. Plenty of Western food outlet's as well.There is a Vietnamese rest. next to the market's and has only about a dozen item's on the menu. Been there 3 time's to have the pork spring roll's, very delicious. A must do in Nong Khai.
Walking around town, you get the once over look by the girl's working in shop's etc and you alway's see TG's on motor bike's and will also give you the look over. Some of the girl's are very pretty, and some probably have returned home from BKK and Pattaya for a break. A Tesco/Lotus store is also in NK.
I like the joint.

I have not noticed any girl's in Nong Khai with the 'Chinese' look. There are some very attractive girl's up here, light, brown, dark skin and friendly. And I have come across some stunner's btw.
Re Alan Patterson from The Meeting Place. He left terra firma by natural cause's about 3 year's ago and is buried here.
Nong Khai Grand Hotel. 1200b > 2700b night. The cheaper room has 2 single bed's. With all room's it is for 2 people and you get a buffet breakfast. Girl friendly and the disco floor has finished. On the 2nd floor they told me you can be entertained by a country & western band and local girl's do hang out there.
The restaurant on the top floor (9th) also has a band and what a great view overlooking Nongkhai, the river and into Laos, very romantic. The Hotel has a bit of age on it's side, but kept in very good condition.

Barra- Could you elaborate- is this 'finished' as in construction completed, or 'finished' as in open on longer.
I wonder if that Contry Western venue on the second floor used to be the hotel's karaoke room. If it's at the top of that spiral stair coming up from the lobby it may be.
