In case there's somebody who hasn't seem them, the Udon Thani 3-wheelers are essentially the front half of a motorcycle with the back replaced by an axle supporting a platform with seats facing like a Pattaya baht bus and a canopy. It's all of a piece on a rigid frame rather than a trailer arrangement and passengers board from the rear.
It's not like a tuk-tuk which has forward-facing, side-boarding passenger seats and a sort of a cab for the driver.

I'm really surprised to hear about the violence in Udon, I've lived in Udon for 6 years and I haven't seen any violence of any sort. I never feel under threat when walking the streets of Udon, I feel more vunerable back in my UK home town where I see violence regulary.
Thanks for posting the information though, it's always good to know what is happening around as there is no English newspaper and everything is word of mouth.
I personally don't like Tongs bar anyway, I usually go to 'Time' which is located next door, they have friendly women serving unlike Tongs which are all men. Another good place which is also close by is 'Tricky Pub' if you don't mind loud dance music, plenty of tasty chicks though!
