am about to take a mini bus for 500 baht ferry included!
but when its all said and done 1700 baht is not bad...especially when on holiday...that is after all a taxi ride home from a bar back home!!!

Well, if her choice was a taxi (you pay) or a bus (you pay)... easy choice for some girls. 
If you get the ferry ticket with the minibus, it is only good for one of the ferry companies. There are two ferry companies, so you might miss the next boat if it not with the company you booked.
Also, you should never buy a return ticket. Returning to Ban Phe from Koh Samed is easy, go down to the pier and get on the next ferry going, regardless of company. If you already have a ticket, it might not be honored by the ferry you want to get on. Or you might find someone else who is going and share a speedboat directly from the Saikaew Beach. With 4 or 5 people, it is not too expensive and saves lots of time.

but, as another poster indicated, 1700 baht is about the price the meter shows at home when closing the door of the cab at the next corner... and this guy even bought us local pineapple on the way...
we returned by minivan btw (packed with KSR dudes and dudettes, which made sleeping easy, and worse, the driver thought he was Micheal Shoemaker) ; on a previous occassion I went by the blue-and-white public bus, which is perfectly fine.
On the way to Ban Phe, some tout on a motorbike, 5 kms ahead of Ban Phe, directed us to some tour-operator, who kindly offered us a speedboat to VongDuearn beach for the meager price of 3000 baht... uhm... no thx.
Fortunately, some ppl wanting to share showed up; we got speedboat to Vongduearn for 400 baht. Stayed in Vongduearn Resort, beach-side bungaloo, which, frankly, sucked, compared to for example, Koh Chang bungalows for halve the price (3000/1500).
Loved every minute staying there again. Apart from the lousy accomodation, the beaches are good, the beach-side restaurants ok, the beach-side bars laid-back, and location relative to BKK can't be beat (Hua Hin anyone? but that's no island...).

I disagree about this. Face has little to do with this if you two are going alone with none of her friends. I think it has more to do with some BGs disregard for the money of their customer.
