The only other deal I have run into that seems EXCEPTIONAL is Menam hotel VERY VERY cheap on
airasia.com website for the MENAM HOTEL,, BUT SO CHEAP I WONDER IF I WILL BE STAYING IN THE CLEANERS ROOM?
I may well take the risk coming holiday in December and if all goes ok will relate back to BTF so others can take advantage

I have stayed at the Rydges and found it very girl friendly. The general manager is heavily into the local Sanuk scene. I noticed several "troups" of ladies arranged for several japanese tour groups.

Stayed at the Rydges again two weeks ago. Paid $30 a night this time - it's interesting to see the various reports here of what people pay for the same place. I think some rooms (those facing mountain for example) are more expensive than others. Anyway, it's still cheap as chips for the location and quality.
Happy to hear that it's girl-friendly despite what they say in the book. I checked in with GF, so never tested it.

I am looking for a 4-5 star hotel in CM. Girl friendly, suite room with huge bed, a sofa and work area (table+chair). I am searching BTF for hours now, but "nice and clean, good breakfast" is of course very subjective. Hence I better say I like a 4-5 stars hotel to be safe. I will stay only a week or so, otherwise I would be better off (=cheaper) with an apartment I guess.
In BKK I stay at Majestic Grande hotel in a suite room as well, so that is the kind of hotel type I am looking for in CM also (~3THB).
Thanks for any info!

Empress Chiang Mai hotel is girlfriendly, quite good and quite cheap if booked from here: http://r24.org/bkkx.com/chiangmai/empress/
I stayed in "Superior" room last year and it was quite nice. Bed was normal, not huge but not small. I don't remember wherever there was a sofa or not. Breakfast was very good, very wide selection of food. Overall the hotel was very clean and nice.
Only downsides that I could find are that there aren't inroom safes (there are free safes at the reception) and that the hotel is some distance away from the center (about 1km from Night Bazaar if I remember correctly).

In oz you can book it for 4 nights for $163........At the hotel this time of year its 1400 baht to 2700 baht depending on room.
Very nice decor and room (includes breakfast)
Girls love it
Warning its 400 baht joiner fee but the place such good value and a solid 4 stars its worth it.

Ive stayed at several fantastic hotels in Chiang Mai and never paid more than 800 baht a night usually around the shoulder of peak seasons.
Why pay so much for hotels there when they dont get anywhere near the numbers of tourists as places like Samui and Phuket etc and usually have less than 50% occupancy all the year round???
