I beg to differ with you Duckie. There hasn't been a departure tax at the airport in over 3 years. It is now included in the ticket price. You might want to keep up with the times. There ARE police checks on Koh Chang island, although they are aimed mostly at motorbike drivers without helmets, they will pull over car drivers too, if they are foreigners. The cost for no helmet is bt500, with Thais only paying bt200...lolol. My friend drives that road every day at about 10am going to work, and has spent on average bt800 a month for no helmet. She doesn't like to wear one, and gets stopped at the same place all the time. The police stop is just past the top of the hill on the way to Lonely Beach. It is there at least 3 days a week from 10am until 1pm. I can tell it's been awhile since you've been there Duckie....lolol.

Daffy& Kool... Air con VIP bus leaves from Airport to Koh Chang white sand beach, correct ? If my flight arrives late, for any reason, I will miss the bus. So, better I will stay nearby Airport hotel and catch the bus next day morning. Or, else from Ekamai bus station. Please advise if this inf/arrangement is correct.

... I periodically read about people choosing to stay in an airport hotel to avoid missing flights (or, a VIP bus in your case)... don't over-play the trip to Suvarnabhumi... it's really not that far out, if you have enough self-discipline to get out of bed. ... by staying at a Suvarnabhumi Airport hotel, you miss a night out in BKK?.. c'mon bud, get your priorities sorted... check into a BKK hotel with just reasonable toll road access, enjoy a night out at the bars, or just ease into it at one of many great restaurants and an early night. ... I recall that you are travelling with a girlfriend... maybe arrange a call-in to join you for an early evening, just to get limbered up before you get into any rodeo-grade stuff... and when the alarm goes off, get up, shit, shower, shave... and go!... get there early if you need, have breakfast and a shot of jet fuel at Starbucks... if you burn it late the night before, you can sleep on the bus. ... a night in BKK is too much to waste because you are afraid you can't make a bus departure!... buck-up cowboy and wrap in, it's f***ing rodeo time!

Just got back from Laos, sorry. The bus leaves from either of the bus stations, the one at Ekamai, or the one at Mo Chit, and it does not go all the way to White Sand Beach. It takes you to the ferry, then after you get off the ferry you take a songtaew to White Sand Beach, at bt50 charge. You can stay the night anywhere that is by a BTS station, then take the BTS in the morning to the On Nut station, and cross the street to the Ekamai bus station, and get your tickets. It is easy to do. I like to take the bus from Ekamai because it is right by the BTS station. Going to the Mo Chit station you have to take a taxi, or motortaxi to get the rest of the way to the station as it is not right by the Mo Chit BTS station. You want to catch a bus before noon so you do not miss the ferry, (I like to take the 7:40am bus) and also get to your hotel before dark. The first bus is at 6:00am, then they leave about every hour until midnight, but if you catch a later bus you will miss the ferry. It quits running at 8pm I believe, and starts up at 6am. Go to the Ekamai bus station and get a bus from a VIP company that goes to Koh Chang, and not just to Trat, or you will have to get to the ferry on your own from Trat. If you go into the Ekamai station on the bottom floor, and turn to your right just as you go in the door you will see the first company that is a very good VIP bus company that gets you onto the island, they get you to the ferry then also give you a RT ferry tichet. From there you catch the songtaew to White Sand Beach, and they drop you off at the 7-11, with just a short walk to any hotel. It is real easy to do, even for first timers.

... Koolbreeze has it right, stay in a hotel next to a BTS station... but, do not take a taxi, take the BTS to Ekkamai (otherwise, why stay near a BTS tation?)... Prakanong to Ekkamai is a 2-minute BTS ride (a taxi during rush hour could be indeterminate)... so, don't feel constrained to a hotel at Prakanong... each BTS station is about a 2-minute trip only, which opens up a world of choices for hotels.i

(rolls eyes) Dude, *I* know that - the cop doesn't care. You can tell him that you keep the purple in there to wipe you ass with, for all he cares. It's called a "cover story". Get with the program

Yes, indeed, it's been a while since February this year... I've driven up and down the island nearly every day of staying there, and never been stopped - and my car is very obviously farang filled. Your friend is pretty dumb if she knows, and gets stopped at the same place every time, sorry to observe - but yeah, koolbreeze is right - you are far more likely to be stopped on a motocy; you are also far more likely (near 100%) to have an accident on a motocy.

The 7/11 on White Sand Beach is 35 seconds away from KC Grande - basically, walk back about 500 feet, and there you are. If you're going to be staying at KC Grande, why not make it easier on yourself, and take a Bangkok Airways flight to Koh Chang? Technically, it's the Bangkok Airways flight to Trat (twice a day, morning 10ish and afternoon 5ish), which will put you on a shuttle to Koh Chang. The 300 Baht includes the price of the ferry, and will drop you off at your hotel, and far more comfortable than hiking it via VIP bus and multiple destinations.
