1) Yes. Yes. Some Thai borders are asking to see your travel cash on entry. A ticket out is also an official requirement. However, enforcement is lax. I always have a visa as Thailand is my base. 2) Means the Lao police can't shake you down for sleeping with one of their lasses. Again, rarely enforced. 3) Tesco Lotus, Nong Khai. Fancy French restaurants and hotels in Vientiane. 4) Tesco Lotus, Nong Khai. No malls in Vientiane; it is VERY third-world compared to LoS.

Khiang Khong guesthouse in Nong Khai. Has anyone heard of this place? One street back from the river...not far from Mut Mee guesthouse and the Nagarina boat. I stayed there last time and would like to again but I cannot seem to locate any phone number or email address to contact this place to make a reservation. Any info would be much appreciated.

Any updated info on P4P in Nong Khai? Travelled thru town about a week back (Laos Visa Run), lots of Farang walking around. Also, saw a large number of Farang looking bars with ladies stilling outside. Mekong River walk was empty, did visit the food market for some fresh (so called) fish. Regular market was ok, nothing special on sale and no great deals to be had.

Earlier this year Mrs S and I stayed in a small hotel that was directly accross the road from the old disused railway station. Do not remember its name. It was Ok but later when we found the Pantawee hotel in town we wished we were staying there. Simply because it meant we were already in town and did not have to look too hard for a samlor. We had the TTM at the Pantawee - OK. http://thailand.pantawee.com/

Last visa run Mrs S and I stayed at a new hotel in Nong Khai. The Dee Heng Dee. I understand it only opened a few months ago. Its almost opposite the old railway station. Rooms at the back of the hotel have a river view. Rooms are clean with tiled floors, air-con, sat tv, in room fridge, hot water showers, comfortable bed. There is a table and 2 chairs on the balcony and a light. Hotel has a lift. Looked like it was about 6 floors high (I can't remember). The downstairs lobby area is open, light and spacious, with armchairs and sofas and Tv sets. There is cold bottled beer available from a fridge by the check in desk (not free, you have to pay for it). There is a small open air restaurant outside at the back, by the river. Did not eat here so can't comment on food. From converstaions with reception I gather the hotel is owned by a Thai man who was educated in the USA. Price for our room - at the back with a river view and balcony - was THB550 per night. Also had to pay a refundable key deposit of TH100. Only negative that I remember is that there is no in room safety box. But that seems about normal for Nong Khai. We'll stay here again next visa run. While it's new it's good. Probably like most things Thai they will never repair stuff when it goes wrong, and not carry out any maintenance or decoration work, and so over the years the standard may decline. But for now it seems easily the best available for the money. Searched the wibbly wobbly web for a website but hotel does not seem to have one. But did find this link from a recent BKK Post article which reviews the hotel (and others) : http://www.bangkokpost.com/travel/news/205803/get-into-the-flow The review says the rooms at the front of the hotel are only THB450 per night (no river view). Did not know that. It also give the hotel phone number as: 042-413-595 I confirm that is also the phone number on my receipt.

Thanks for the report. My recollections of Nong Khai are the Pantawee Hotel and a local watering hole called The Meeting Place. The hotel had a computer in every room, the only other hotel I've stayed with such a room amenity was the Aladdin in Las Vegas. How would you compare this hotel with the Pantawee?

Quote: from thaiaficionado on 11:56 am on Dec. 21, 2010 ...How would you compare this hotel with the Pantawee?
We have stayed at the Pantawee Hotel in town and the Pantawee Resort out of town by the river (as well as the Dee Heng Dee). For me the new one - the Dee Heng Dee - is the best. The Pantawee Hotel did have an in room computer as you say, but the rooms were dark and smelled of damp. Also the lock on the door did not seem very strong. The Pantawee Hotel was showing its age. (I take my laptop with me so did not need to use the PC in the room). The same can be said about the Pantawee Resort, its cheaper but the rooms are looking very tatty now. For me the Dee Heng Dee is streets ahead of both Pantawee's. DHD is out of town but there are samlors waiting on the road outside. Incidentally there is an older hi-rise hotel on the same side as the DHD but closer to town. Can't remember the name but we checked out the rooms there. It was another old hotel with very tatty rooms. Reception warned us the hotel gets noisy at night. We did not stay there. It had the look of a short time place - there was a karaoke bar and massage shop downstairs plus a bar. There was a lorry load of crated-up empty beer bottles outside the karoke, waiting to be taken away. So probably a good place to find some local company if you are on your own. If I remember correctly I think we were quoted about THB900 for this hotel.
