I had the worst night of my life on Koh Pha-ngan after a strong shroom smoothie a few years back. There were three of us and we all had an equally bad experience. Just waaaaay too intense, especially for such a crowded, chaotic setting. Yikes. I was glad to be in one piece and still feel reasonably sane the next day when I woke up.
So my advice would be... go easy on those, they can be deceptively strong. Tripping is can be a good, eye-opening experience but trust me, a level 5 trip in a crowded beach with strangers everywhere is not much fun. Actually, at the point when it reached level five, it wouldn't really matter where I was since I wasn't 'there' anyway. 
Now I can look back at it, laugh, and consider it an educating experience though.
Funny anecdote: There was a big log near where
the beach changed into a grassy little hill. I sat on it. My tripping friend kicked the log several times before sitting on it. He explained to me that he needed to check if the crocodile was dead and OK to sit on. In his mind, the question wasn't "is that a log or a crocodile", it was "is this crocodile dead or alive" ....

Anyway, it's not like we're talking about yaba or heroin here, mushrooms are actually legal in most countries - including Thailand, I believe - and found on the menus of numerous beach bars (omelettes etc).

Good story - I know those levels. I find the last few levels to be somewhat soothing and mellow as you come down from the peak. I'm not planning on doing anything like that in a crowd. I prefer the company of a few close friends. I would never do anything in Thailand though, way too risky. But thanks for the story - funny stuff about your friend.
