Are hotels in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai generally guest friendly? Does anyone have any specific information or recommendations, esp. in the 800-1500 baht range?

Try the Montri....about 500 baht and close to bars and stuff. Friendly staff....girl friendly. Also Star hotel is fine and located near nite bazaar. decent restruant...about 600 baht or 700 per nite.

mingus, check out prima house hotel, ask any tuk tuk samlor they all know it @ 500 baht with air and guest friendly manager speaks perfect english good luck

I'm planning to be in Chiang Mai later this year. Star hotel seems to be a good choice, but, is it girl friendly?

Chiang Rai;
Two recomendations.
The Tourist Inn is a guest house within about 7 mins walk of the centre. Can't remember exact prices, but think about 350 Baht for a single room. They also bake their own bread.
If you want a nicer central hotel go to the Wiang Come hotel, but ask for a STANDARD room. They won't offer these to you unless you know. about 700-800 Baht incl breakfast.

Tamarind Village. Located within the walls of the old city - set in its own gardens, it seems to be miles from anywhere until you step outside and its bang smack in the middle of ThaPae Gate - A really nice place - No joiner fee. Stayed here on my last trip, No problem in bringing girls back and even had room cleaned twice a day when asked for it. (tipped well after the first request of course). Food is good, and drink reasonably priced.
