I plan to go to Ko Samet in the upcoming trip.  Any recommendation on a nice hotel?   Thank you in advance for the help.

I spent a few days on Ko Samet last fall, a nice place, i really liked it.

There are no "big" hotels on the island, everything is set up in bungalows.  I stayed at Saikaew Beach Resort and i would recommend it.  Though the furnishings are spartan, it is clean and done with style.

Note:
Saikeaw Beach is the "main beach"  Most of the bungalow hotels are side by side down this beach. It's quite pleasant at night to go for a stroll down the beach and stop at the various beach bars, restaurants etc.  There are some bungalows on other locations on the island, if you are seeking solitude then you might like them better, but if you don't want to completely lose civilization stick to Saikeaw beach.

I wish i was there now...

Just another note:

If you want companionship on Ko Samet, you'll probably need to bring your own.  My TG loved it and was very appreciative

well you could swim there if you're feeling fit;)

if you mean is there a bridge or so linking the island to the mainland, then no.  When I went there it was really a ferry as such I went in... just a kinda small half-open boat.  (oh geez and the water was choppy!!!!)

Should you book one of the hotels on the west side of the island, like 'Ao Prao' resort, then I think it would be better to arrange the boat transfer with them, that way you arrive on the west side of the island.  Most of the other boats go the east side... where sai kaew is.  Mind you it's such a small island the taxi ride wouldn't take long from east to west.

If sai laew is the beach with the big mermaid carved in the rocks... then definitely go there!  It's beautiful!

(it may have had something to do with the time of year I was there... but make sure you have tons of insect and mosquito repellant... there were loads of flies during the day time - vicious annoying flies - and at night lots of mosquitos)

On the way to the island i went by speed boat, though the cost was extra, i think it was worth it just because it is so cool when the boat pulls up right next to the white sand beach and the guys walk out in the water to get your luggage, then you jump in to walk ashore. I got the feeling of an explorer arriving in paradise.

There is also a "big" ferry boat that docks on the west side of the island, right by Ao Prao Resort.  I took the ferry on the way back as the fee is apparently included with the lodging at Saikeaw village (no one mentioned it before hand though.)  There is a short truck ride through the jungle to get to the dock.  (wouldn't have quite the same feeling as arriving on the shore, IMHO)

The ferry is more comfortable and economical.
The speedboat is faster and more fun.

X, what time of year were you there?  I was there in November, there were a few mosquito's but it wasn't too bad.  Not to the point that i needed repellant anyways.

Yep Saikeaw has the mermaid sculpture, it has something to do with a famous Thai love poem...

AFM, I was there roughly end of May beginning of June... I always have d.e.e.t mossie repellant with me so I got off lightly there, but other people were going apeshit cos of the mossies.... and in the day time... the flies were amazing... I've never seen so many flies.

But .... I still had a lovely time and will go back a.s.a.p... and that beach with the mermaid carving is so beautiful.

If you don't mind me asking what does a speed cost to the island (approximately)... and can you just arrive in Ban Pe and hire a speed boat with driver from there?

I was afraid you were going to say that!
I'm planning to go back at the beginning of June.  I guess i'll bring some repellant and brace myself for some flies.  There weren't any flies that i recall in Nov.  Just those crazy dogs running around the beach.

I "think" the speed boat was few hundred baht per person, don't remember exactly (might have included the national park fee?)  I think it's the same kind of "half open boat" that you described in your first post, nothing too fancy...

My driver from Pattaya didn't know where he was going, some kid on a scooter guided us to a dock where the speed boat takes off from.  (gee, i wonder if scooter boy gets a commision? )

Anyone know of any very nice clean and charming but not fancy bungalows in high peak season, early January for under 2000 baht?

Trying to figure out is the main beach "too crowded"  or the remote beaches "too remote"?

nice site about Samed (in Thai)

http://www.samedcenter.com

oddly enough TAT recommends Ao Hin Khok as inexpensive http://www.tourismthailand.org/destinationguide/list.aspx?provinceid=12&typeid=7

but TAT's info is worth shit, after I did a search using the words Koh Samet in Thai characters I came up with a lot more info
