Can anyone recommend a nice quiet beach with good swimming/snorkeling for mid-september? Hoping the storms do not come early this year. Want to spend a couple nights aways form the mases on Samui.

After just returning from there in June and driving all around the island, I can most certainly provide you with some info on the subject. You can get into some fairly remote accomodations down some REALLY bad roads. some of the beaches are only accesible by boat and dont have 24 X 7 power.

Take the Lompraya Ferry to get there and back. They pick up drop off on the Samui side

Full Moon party, Half Moon Party... sucked... no Thai people, mostly fat falang 20-something drinking and throwing up everywhere (at least according to the BG I brought with me who was out walking around at 8:30AM
while I was still asleep)

I learned something very interesting when I was there. for half the year the tide is out all day on the West side of the island and then the reverse is true on the East Side. You may want to inquire about this if it is important.

I rented a Jeep and explored all around. I found a very quiet bay that my BG was so enamored with she was going to go back there with a group of her friends to holiday.

The place is on the East Side and called Thong Naipan Beach Resort & Spa. I talked to the guy and he said they had only been open 6 months. There is the usual restaurant on the beach bit and there are other bungalow operations nearby on the same beach. It was not crowded at all. This might be because the road to get there is 45 min of dirt road. The last bit which is "paved" is the worst of all due to the huge potholes. Also, I am not able to give specific directions to the resort since it down this unmarked dirt road through some little village area through this over that etc. etc. But, I would imagine they would come pick you up at the ferry.

The full address is Thong Nai Pan Noi Beach
tel (66 77) 445 132 3 jutanee@newlapaz.com

This is very uncrowded.. no wave action on the beach. poor vis for snorkeling but good for swimming.

He did write down the rates, as I recall it was fairly cheap but not rock bottom. farther back from beach = cheaper of course. He did have aircon as well as fan.

Be very wary of the Tuk Tuk to this side of the island. I tried to get a guy to take me and he wanted 1000B so I rented a Jeep for 800 which was better anyway because I got to go where I wanted to go. This of course, presumes you can handle driving in the the Thai "halodeck of driving" with a stickshift.

I also spent a couple of days on the West side of the island at a beach called Haad Yao and guess what? The tide was out all day long... no swimming unless you want to walk all the way out to the reef. Various prices on accomodations. Ended up staying at Long Bay resort. interesting area out there. Basically the road turns to dirt and it is the last little group of bungalow operations etc on that part of the island. You get much past Long Bay Resort and you need 4 wheel drive. I have no idea how the Tuk Tuk take people to these places but I did see the Long Bay pickup truck at the dock but they charge for the ride, 500B I think.

What we did was took Tuk Tuk from place to place and checked out the rooms at each one. Each one has seafood restaurant on the beach and at night they have a fire and music... pretty lazy days to be sure.

Long bay was not the cheapest but it was the biggest and nicest and the only one with a pool. Breakfast was included. There were others nearby Long Beach resort and Haad Yow Bungalows that might be worth a look. Of course this one came on BG reccomendation since she spent 3 months there with someone. There are no less than 2 minimarts walking distance from this place.

Another tip. A Lao man who we rented a jeep from said that during high season you cant find accomodation anywhere in this area by just showing up. So I guess it is fairly popular during high season.

Seemed to me it was fairly difficult to just go snorkeling off the beaches. bad visibility every time. I think you need to get on a boat to do it right. There was a rocky point outcropping that I didnt explore, it might have better there with less sand in the water.

Hope this helps

btw if you want to stay away from masses on Samui, drive up to Lamai... totally different feel crowd-wise with many bars etc. I really liked it.

thanks for that. We may try the Thong Naipan Beach Resort & Spa for a couple nights. Are these bugalows w/fan or A/C?

I have spent months at this place and its very nice. Just down the mountain is Mae Haad bay which has a beautiful beach and a very nice reef just off the beach. Wang Sai bungalows is also a good place to stay but not with near as many amenities. You are close to the small town of Chaloklum which is very quiet.

Mae Haad is an excellent bay for swimming. Its probably the best reef on Phangan. There are lots of corals, giant clams, anenomoes, clown fish, grouper, small baracuda, hound fish, parrotfish, blue spotted stingrays, and hundreds of assorted tropical fish. The hike down is not bad at all. My mom stayed at Utopia for 2 weeks and she walked down every day.I am a lazy bastard so I always ride my motorbike down. The owners of the resort are more than happy to give you a ride down and pick you up at a designated time. I have stayed at dozens of different places and this is the only place that I recommend to people. You should be able to negotiate much better prices than are shown on the website.

So you think it's ok to show up without reservations mid to late september? I hope the weather holds out and the storms do not decide to start early this year. Thanks for the info.

You will have no problem getting a room unless its around the full moon. I am sure ven then at that time of year they will have rooms. I would call ahead so that they can pick you up at the dock when you arrive. Very nice family that owns the place.
