You wanted recent Khon Kaen info, I'm a very regular visitor.
The best action is to be found in two places:
The disco at the Sofitel Hotel and the disco at the Charoen Thani Hotel.
Plenty of freelancers.
Other than those places check out the bars in the Times Square area. But those discos will keep you happy and every hotel is guest friendly.

I was in Khon Kaen for a few days last summer, stayed at the Sofitel, and did not find the disco very farang-friendly. In fact, I was asked to leave after one drink. I was not drunk, I dressed well, and was just sitting quietly. However, I was the only farang present. The place had a good lighting and sound system, and looked like a hangout for college students.

Yes, Times Square which is a bunch of bars is only a five minute walk from Sofitel.
Turn left out of Sofitel, walk to the end of the road, cross and you'll see it right in front of you.
