I'm going to Chiang Mai in may/June for a week and thought i'd hare for a few days to vist national parks etc.
Just interested if anyone has had any experiences (good or bad) or can give any warnings etc.

Car hire is very, very easy in Chiang Mai.
There are rental services everywhere, especially along the moat; Chaiyapoom Road, Moon Muang Road etc. and on Rajawiti and Rachadamnoen.
Or just ask your hotel to arrange it.

Hi just come back from Chiang Mai, Good car rent is Chiang Mai Car rent, a bloke called Mr Too Mclord, tel 06-6726966 17/2 Kampaengdin Road 1000 baht per day no passport needed so ideal for visa runs to Mae Sai. also right next door is lovely food The woman is from the South so its a bit more spicy than normal northern food, just off Taepea road

I was in Chaing Mai about a year ago. I was set-up with 'Mr. Young' through a travel agency. He spoke fantastic English. The best I found in all of Thailand. Very, very nice guy too. Highly recommended. I don't know what his personal daily rate are but whatever it is he is worth every penny.

I flagged my guy down in the middle of the road, and used him to doi suthep, etc. If you would like to get an early start for a more distant trip, walk to the main street just inside the Tapae Gate. The street runs perpendicular to the gate (and the moat). Drivers line up there to take people starting at 7 AM. English is widely spoken, and rates are about 800 to 1800 baht per day depending on your wishes. I never felt I paid too much; the longest trip I took was about 90 miutes outside the city, the driver spent the entire day with us, and the total cost was 1700 baht. A bargain considering the experience.
