Kanchanaburi should be no problem in August. Make it early in the trip though as it gets wetter the later you leave it.

A quick glance at a map would have told you Kanchanaburi was nowhere near the tsunami, and neither was Siam Reap, Cambodia.

All dive trips (that I know of) have “an oh my god start time“, just a fact of life to get every body on the boat and to the dive sites the time is needed. Most dive operators on Samui will pick up and drop off door to door but as you say a night off the drink is recommended as clearing your mask of spew is not a pleasant task 10 meters down. (I know I’ve done it. Tried to hold it in and it came out my nose, the fish loved the free food though)
Last time on Samui I went with “Easy Divers” had a good time and they seemed a very competent operation.

Just an idea but scout around a couple of days before your dive trip and look for a girl you might like to barfine a bit early in the evening. The day before your trip go to the bar early and take her right away. Take her to dinner and then back to the hotel early for a roll in the hay. Have her stay all night or leave early but you don't have to be out until 1-2 am with this option. A nice relaxing evening is sometimes a good idea and gets you a good nights sleep without all the beer and late hours.

As an extension to LastSurvivor's suggestion, you might like to take late lunch with your new sweetheart/s, some afternoon bedroom action, a couple of relaxing drinks (let her go if you want) & and then early night. Obviously this is no good if you like the sport of trawling bars to all hours, but it might make for a better diving trip.

Hi Tyfon,i'm planning my trip (3 weeks in august too) and interested in trying diving or snorkelling!
anyhow im mostly concerned about the weather,as in august it could b a real bitch!
this is the 5th year in a row that I spend my aug holidays around Thailand,and as I remember,the days where I don't sweared about the rain are a just a couple 
Let's hope this year will b clement,BUT even if it won't rain the sea will b agitated and uneasy to sail,let alone snorkelling. Anyhow in Samui it should b luckyer than Phuket on forecasts...but when I was there,,,u guessed it (Krabi too) where is the umbrella emoticon?
And Then comes the mongering

One of the reasons for this is that many of the dive sites are quite a long boat ride away. Samui's has a few that are closer, but some are also far. Samui has uglier girls (in my opinion) but you'll find something, I'm sure.
Phi Phi is excellent diving, but no nightlife. And they are still rebuilding from the tsunami. And it will be a rare TG that wants to go there.
Diving off of Pattaya is nothing great, but at least it gets you in the water. Dive shops and instruction there are excellent.
Koh Tao is excellent for diving, all sites are close, and there is a little nightlife there. Best to bring your own girl if you are want to get laid every night by someone you don't have to flick off the lights to screw.  Or you pick up one of the hot western chicks that frequent Koh Tao. Koh Tao is time-consuming to reach.
Koh Chang has some good diving and some beer bars too! I like the place. Reachable in a 45 minute cheap flight and shuttle from the airport - 2. hours airport gate to hotel. Not bad.

That's an understatement, as I'm sure you intended. The same happened to me at depth, from seasickness due to a rough ride over.
I also managed to hold it in - until a few feet from the surface, choking out of control as I hit the surface - having risked the bends incidentally to shoot up to the top, and would probably not be here if I had suffered involuntary wretching at depth. We were both very lucky.
The moral of the story: DON'T even think about diving after a night of drinking (which is ALWAYS exacerbated by a boat ride), or on a queasy stomach from just plain seasickness.
