we have done it by car. we went from chiang mai to pai, stayed overnight and then went to mae hong son. stayed overnight and then back to chiang mai

take your time.

lots of things to see.

it took us 3 days.

if you are in a hurry you probably make it there in 5 hours and back in 3 and half.

just catching up on this post.

i went to mae hong son in feb 2009.
heres a little about it if anyones interested.

took a coach from mo chit. I think 700 baht. did so cos no direct train to maehongson. however it was a 15 hour trip! advice not to do it like this, it was horrible and waste of a precious day. I left at 3pm, it stopped around 3 times for food. however it got bad as it got to the last 6 hours in total darkness. the coach was swinging side to side as I went thru the mountains. at 6am, in the mist I arrived. tortuous journey. the bus had around 10 people left on as many dropped off in the wilderness.the coach station is 5 mins from the centre of MHS. a tuktuk took me there. nobody about except a few monks. it was dark, cold and misty. I had nowhere booked! great! I eventually sorted out from a map the main street and found a room at 600 baht p night. had a rest. got up around 10am to a view from my window. beautiful! mountains and temples and amazing shaped roofs. I stayed 4 days. however, I went there for the scenery, for something new and different. it was. no bar girls/ no gogos/ no mcdonalds no kfc, just a few 7-11. it was weird. but beautiful. very quiet. I hired a motorbike(250cc) and went biking. I got as far as pai, went back. amazing scenery. theres nothing to do at night though. just a few restaurant bars to watch the soccer. the walk home though is dangerous with many dogs about! theres a market at night around the lake. must see is the wat on top of the hill overlooking the town. the trip back was better. I could have chosen a sesnor plane to go to chiang mai but was a little expensive. I chose an early morning bus to chiang mai. this was a good choice as I saw amazing views and took many pics/video. 6 hours to chiang mai and then took a plane back to bkk.
overall, a really memerable visit. nice people. not many foreigners(met 6) good for motorcycling/driving.
