Has anyone dived from Khao Lak recently
Well not recently but last year I did and it was terrible. I really much prefer Khao Lak over Phuket for a relaxing get-away. OK, so the bar scene is pretty lame this is true but it does exist and beaches are much nicer.
If you've not been diving the Similans before, it ain;t what it use to be. Unless you do a live-aboard, you will go with a regular operator that will likely have a number of inexperienced divers. Why do you care? Because the less-common-denominator factor kicks in. Also it is 1.5 hours by speed boat assuming OK conditions but that can be a brutal 1.5 hours for 2 drops.
Most operators will not go to the really nice Similan drops as they can be more challenging due to currents. So rather than to risk the safety of the newbies, they go to less dangerous areas but (IMHO) pretty lame for diving. I understand the operators position but I am looking for more spectacular dives that what I got there.
If you wnat good diving head south from Phuket about 1 hour and there will be plenty of everything.

Really, having been a cigarette smoker and a non cigarette smoker, some people just take it toooooo far,, as long as the smoke is not being blown in my face it really doesn't make any difference.I doubt many will be lighting up when diving.
Reality check.

As for the non-smoking live-aboard, not very likely unless you find a TDI operation <joke only, I have the utmost respect for TDI divers>
The Similans are amazing but unless you go with a group of well seasoned divers, you will see a lot of rock...big f'ing rocks. Frankly, after the 3rd or 4th, it's enough already. South, way south of Phuket is so much nicer and easier diving usually but you still have to watch the currents. We had some folks on my last dive there pulled into a down current and before we knew it, we were at 160 feet... not a pretty place to be.
Doing the LB is the only way to do the best dives for Similan otherwise, head south. and as MG indicates, either deal with it or forget about it.
Personally, I am still trying to figure out how to get that smoke in whilst at 30 meters without having to find an air pocket in a wreck or cave

Large groper here in Aus offer sufficient air-pocket for the opportunity of a quick ciggy whilst enjoying a reef
Alternatively one could just try a nicotine patch if they are not banned
But after a great dive, same as great sex,, best thing to do is light up an excellent cigar / gigarette,,, ecologically friendly, renewable source,, minimal ozone layer depletion and bloody nice

Quite true...and they have the right to avoid you as well.
With that understanding, talk to some of the operators and see. If you are willing to meet somewhere in the middle, most boats I've been on have designated smoking and non-smoking areas so we can all live in peace and harmony.  better yet, just drink heaps after the dive and you won't care!
mg...Will have to look for some larger grope hers next time I am down. Did the great white shark dive off Dangerous reef and Neptune, 7-11 meters and 1100+ kilos, now there was an air pocket!

All decent liveaboards will have a ban on smoking below decks & in cabins etc. The risk of fire is too great.
Smoking is allowed on the open deck but if you are sitting up wind you should be ok!
The dive boat Panunee is going to Sims in mid December

Cigarette smoke doesn't smell that good,, but compaired to some peoples odor, or the smell of exhaust fumes from car's, or fertiliser manufacture, your typical sukumvit soi smell etc etc etc, it's not that bad.
P.S to quote a President from a small,insignificant country " but I didn't inhale" !!!
