Can anybody tell me anything about Beung Kan in Nong Khai province. I did a search and drew a blank.

I have used the same spelling that my Lonely Planet guide to Thailand uses. My Lonely Planet is a few years old now and it does not particularly enthuse about Beung Khai.

It is described as "a small dusty town on the Mekhong River, 185km east of Nong Khai". It sounds like a place to break a journey overnight if you travel from Nong Khai to Nakhon Phanom following the N.East border. Something that Mrs Shreddie and I have talked about doing on our next trip to LOS.

Are there any half decent places to stay - hotels or guest houses; and are there places where I could get some western food to eat and a beer or two? Mrs Shreddie will be in her element with the local food.

Try spelling Bung Kan,,, it's certainly in the "back-woods".
The map here.... http://www.clickthai.de/Map/index.html
I have always found handy.

Cheers

Thanks for helping Mel. Maps of the province are not a problem really. There seem to be a few on the internet. This link takes you to a fairly good one also, possibly better than the link you suggested:

I found that link on this forum when reading a thread about Nong Khai.

Not scoring points Mel, but on this map it is also spelled Beung Kan. I have seen a few different English transliteration spellings in different travel guides and have tried searches using a few different ones, but there does not seem to be much on the net or this forum under any of the spellings.

Some help with places to stay in town or perhaps town maps of Bung Kan is a big ask, but would be really helpful. Although I suspect Bung Kan or Beung Kan is a one street, one bar, one guesthouse, town.

Three years ago, I did just what LP suggested--from Nong Khai, I took bus rides east on the road by the Mekong River, eventually ending up in Ubon Ratchathani, after several overnight stops. My first overnight stop was in Beung Kan. I don't have a lot of vivid memories of the town, except as a peaceful place with a nice view of the river, and a helpful tuktuk driver who took me from the bus station to a guesthouse near the river. The guesthouse owner was a farang (sorry, don't remember any names) who was pleasant to chat with, and let me use his computer to send emails to various friends as I boasted about reaching the far outpost of NE Thailand, until I got too drunk to boast any more. As I think I remember, there were a couple of rustic riverfront Thai restaurants with OK food. No idea about farang food there--bring your own.
