I will share some thoughts here.

I went to the elephant roundup in Surin last year. Rented a 4x4 Suzuki for about 1800 baht a day, including full insurance.

The drive to Surin took about 5 hours. However, the drive home on a Sunday night took about 9. Everyone who was visiting their relatives up country was returning from the weekend, and traffic was bumper to bumper. The elephant roundup, however, was worth it!

you can take a plane to buridam on PBAir, then rent a taxi/driver... or u can take a bus which I assume is grueling. Or you can rent a car and it will take 5-6hrs.

I would recommend the nighttrain. I think the drive from Bangkok too Surin is long and boring. Dosent matter if you use bus or car, a bit better if you drive yourself, but I have taken the nighttrain and will do so in the future. The standard on the trains are not First Class even if they call it so, but it is ok.

http://www.railway.co.th/english/index.asp

Type of Car : Air – Conditioned First Class Day and Night Coach
Abbreviation : A.N.F.
Number of rooms : 12 Rooms/2 persons each
Number of Sleeping Berths : 12 upper, 12 lower

I think I paid around 1 000,-baht for the trip. The hotel was informed by my very early arrival so I just went straight to bed.

The trip did take 9 hours, 1hour more then schedule but was ok, since I slept most of the time.

Also there was some offers to come with me to Surin/Buriram by girls that wanted a free trip home to their mummy. But I passed offcourse! I will also check airplane next time but since nearest airport is a bit far away from Surin I dont think I will be much pleased vs. nighttrain.

PB Air fly's to Buri-ram,, 1750 BHT +, less than an hours flight ( from memory around 45 minutes).Surin is quite close.
Depending on length of your holiday and therefore valuation of time wasted, this could be a good option.

Regards
Mel.

Buriram Airport is actually located at Stuk (sp?) which is approx 30-35 km out side of Buriram and approx 60 odd kms from Surin.

Taxi (??) services from the airport are limited and it would be best to make prior arrangements for pick up.

Reasonably good local info on the Farang Connection website. FC is a Bar / Restaurant run by Martin (just accross from the Bus Station) and offers a good selection of Imported Beers and quite reasonable Western food. The Cheese platter is very good for this part of the world.

The elephant festival (mid November) is an interesting experience, but like anything that is farang tourist oriented, somewhat overpriced...LOL...

A couple of local "fish bowls"... behind Thong Tarin Hotel and Memorial Hotel come to mind....not that I've sampled either....

In a Soi just up from Thong Tarin Hotel there are a couple of Thai style GoGo Bars....worth a look but you'll need some language skills.
In the same Soi is the local "Disco".....interesting that the "performers" here wear much more revealing costumes than the dancers in the GoGo bars.....5555..... TIT...

Quite a few of the "Carabao" type, wagon wheel "Country style" Bars scattered around the City....but be careful... one of them was closed down last year because of shootings.....

Plenty of good places to eat and not expensive.

Thong Tarin Hotel is fine....I think from memory about 840Bt a night...... Wacky Tacky used the Suites there....but I think a tad more expensive...55555

Quite a few farangs in the area now, many having built retirement "Villas" in the district.

All in all a good City, with plenty to do and see in the surrounding areas.

Cheers DS.... (eventual local resident...when the "Villa" finally gets completed)

I just spent almost 2 weeks in Surin with a brief return back to BKK in the middle. Surin is not really all that close to the airport. I think at least a 90 minute drive and there is nothing to see but your typical rice, rubber, etc farms. A few Farang houses and many, many old falling down Thai homes. It is a pleasant place to stay. I stayed at the Majestic Surin hotel for about $20 per night. This is the newest hotel and has a nice pool with free buffet breakfast and free internet in the lobby. This hotel is about 100 feet from the bus station and might be another option instead of flying. Martin at Farang connection will provide you with a car and driver for about 2k per day. Airport pickup can also be arranged for same amount. We stayed in Surin a couple of nights and then moved to Prasat. YAWN. The hotel was new, clean but there was absolutely nothing to do. I watched a lot of movies and spent a LOT of time at the pool. I can provide you with the hotel name in Prasat if you need it. Free Internet (one computer) but no breakfast. During the Surin stay I was a bit to worried about visiting the gogo's, mp's and such. The wife is from the area and I did not want any risk of getting caught in the TG rumor mill
