Planning a trip soon to Krabi, this will be my first trip there so need some advice. Hotel is quoting 600 baht (per person) for a one way transfer from Krabi airport to Ao Nang area. Sounds like a rip-off compared to BKK prices but than again I've never been there before. Just wondering if taxis are readily available at the airport and what is the going rate is to Ao Nang? I'm also planning to go during the September or October period, just wondering what kind of weather to expect during this period? Any advice and information would be greatly appreciated.

I hit Ao Nang for the first time last month. As I recall, taxi from the beach to airport was 300. It takes about 30 minutes or so. I think Taxi from the airport may have been 600, but I split it with another passenger and the ride was in a new car. I bought a voucher in the terminal, you can probably get regular taxis outside (but can't say for sure). There are far better beaches in the area than Ao Nang, but it has some nice bars and restaurants. Best to do some day trips, if it's not raining. I was surprised how expensive the food was, even thai food was higher than elsewhere. August and September have the most rainfall http://www.world66.com/asia/southeastasia/thailand/krabi/lib/climate

thaiaficionado, Thanks for the information. You mentioned that you bought a voucher from the terminal which costs 600 baht, is this valid only for 1 person per car or multiple.

A woman on the same flight approached me and suggested we share the ride and split the cost (300 baht each). The driver didn't object, even when we were staying at different hotels.

The cheapest way I found to get from Krabi airport to Ao Nang was by shuttle bus (a white bus) that travels from Krabi airport to Ao Nang with half a dozen bus stops along the way (Krabi town, bus stop etc), should you want to join the bus between these 2 points. The journey takes around 40 minutes & costs 150Bt. The bus departs around 20 minutes after a plane arrives & will drop you off at the closest point to your Hotel from its route. There is a booth at Krabi airport to purchase a ticket & direct you to the bus The fare from Krabi airport to Krabi Town is 90Bt & takes 15-20 minutes. I stayed in Krabi Town 1 night & the Hotel offered to take me to the airport in a beat up Baht bus for 400Bt , not bloody likely! Wandered down town & the taxi mafia wanted 300-350Bt . I declined their offers & walked the ¼ hour to the bus stop & caught the shuttle bus

Tezza, Anything to do in Krabi town? So do you tell the driver which hotel you're staying at in Krabi town and he'll drop you off at the nearest bus stop? And any idea how often the shuttle goes back to the airport?

I stayed 1 night in Krabi town only, the rest in Ao Nang. I walked by 2 MP's in the shopping district but didn't enter. There are likely more but the 1 night limited my investigations. Krabi town is really a feeder to resorts like Ao Nang & Railay & thats where the ladies tend to congregate Using the (depised) tailor shop numbers as a guide to the number of tourists a town attracts, I saw none in Krabi Town. I spoke to a German dude living here who confirmed there was indeed no tailor shops The bus is at the airport as every major flight arrives(Thai airways,Thai Air Asia, Bangkok Airways). An assistant on the bus is very helpful & will ask where you are staying. The know all the Hotels & will stop the bus at the closest bus-stop to your Hotel & advise where to go, or even stop the bus right outside the Hotel As far as going back to the airport there is a bus leaving Noppharat-Thara beach - 9:30am, 1:25pm, 3:55pm, 5:55pm, & stopping off at half a dozen strategic points along the way to Krabi airport Ring 085-8892664 for information

"Using the (depised) tailor shop numbers as a guide to the number of tourists a town attracts, I saw none in Krabi Town" Krabi Town might not have tailor shops but Ao Nang certainly has a lot. I've been curious and confused about Krabi and Ao Nang for some time and so I finally made the trip. Krabi Town is a small place with an international airport. I didn't stay there but it seemed very quiet. Nearby Ao Nang is not quiet. Its a main access point for trips to Koh Phi Phi and neighboring beaches. It's basically a beach front road with a large number of hotels along a long strip of beach. Its rather scenic with a handful off shore islands with many shops and restaurants. Lots and lots of backpacker types come here - it reminded me of Kao San Road. On the main road near the Burger King is small Entertainment District. Its basically just a U-shaped soi with about 15 to 20 beer bars. Action starts about 8pm or so with pool tables and loud music. Many girls are good to go but I didn't see any stunners and very few cuties. The ones I chatted with though, were decent enought and more easy-going than their sisters at Nana Plaza. I'm guessing if you are particular, you should probably bring your own. Like tezza says, the shuttle bus is a good option. However the trip from Ao Nang back to the airport can sometimes take a little longer. -

Quote: from sfstudmuffin on 6:03 pm on Aug. 5, 2010 I'm planing a trip to Krabi for some rock climbing
... if you will take a break from the pussy hunt, Krabi would be the place to do it... you're going to get plenty of pussy while you are here, but there are few places with rocks like you get down around Krabi. ... whether you are an experienced climber or not, Krabi is ground zero for rock climbing in SE Asia... with limestone karst cliffs reaching hundreds of metres almost straight up from the Andaman, you are going to have a major hard-on while on these walls. ... if you are an experienced climber, you will find authoritative intel far above my ability to advise at http://www.rockclimbing.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=2325606. ... I can, however, recommend Tex's Rock Climbing... 'Tex' is a complete outfitter, guide and instructor... good English... responsible and reliable... don't recall his credentials, but he was recommended to me by a skilled climber some years ago... I've climbed with him several times. ... good gear... rented everything from him, but climbing shoes might be a tight fit if you've big feet... I am a US size 11-1/2, and I squeezed into something he dug from the bottom of the fish bait box. ... try him over on Railei East Beach at +66.(0) 81.607.4822, or +66.(0) 75.622.491... everyone over there knows him. ... as an aside... the nickname 'Tex' is a bit amusing... from Texas, I expected... well... I guess I expected there to be more of him... fully loaded, the guy weighs about 50 kilos... nothing but sinew, bone, teeth and tennis shoes. ... it was very familiar walls on which he worked me, but still, the guy climbs like a lizard-footed spider monkey... constantly beaming with about 60-80 teeth thrown into his head. ... imagine my heart rate as I, at 100kg, took flight after making a reach too far... the "ssssssip" was an unnerving moment longer than I liked, before abruptly springing out... looking over my shoulder, and there some 20 meters below was Tex. ... tail rope bound to a boulder beneath him... him suspended 1-1/2 metres in the air on a taught rope, tight as a piano wire stretched between the biner into which I was snagged above and the boulder below him... big toothy grin, him bouncing and spinning and whooping "I got you big daddy, I got you!"... my butthole was puckered up pretty good... but, I never doubted his grip. ... oh, yeah... recommend that you stay at Railei West Beach... very picturesque... Ao Nong Beach is quite developed and a public road separates resorts from the beach... Railei East Beach is a mud flat... very cheap rates, and for good reason... two recommendations on Railei West Beach, both of which are on the beach: 1) Sand Sea Resort... inexpensive, clean, reliable bungalows... great location... maybe unremarkable, but no surprises... http://www.sandsearailay.com/. 2) Railei Beach Club... very, VERY cool teak villas built up off the ground in a coconut grove, sandwiched between the beach and the cliffs... moderate rates... no A/C, but very comfortable... they are mostly multiple room villas, but the manager will negotiate lower rates for a single room user... http://www.raileibeachclub.com/. ... Railei is a peninsula, accessible to the mainland only by water... frequent long-tail boats ferry you back and forth from Reilai West Beach to Ao Nang Beach, where the night action (such as it is) is located, about a 10 minute boat ride.
