There are a couple threads related to Samui and tend to be rather focused, so I thought I would start one that is for general info purposes....for future query's... Anything goes regarding Samui here...... I am headed to LOS in Feb for a reunion of sorts....a buddy in LA, a buddy living in Dubai (BK you had dinner with him) are meeting up with a friend of mine already there on sabatical and another Thai/American friend that lives there and actually introduced me to Thailand in 2001 (BK and RTB you met him at Toxic) After a few days in BKK 3 of us are headed down to Samui for about a week and I was looking at Al's Resort to stay...I am seeking the $75 to $100 night route and just was curious if any bro's had any tips....(restaurants, bungalows, activities) Obviously, I did the internet search but prefer first hand advice... My last 2 trips to Samui were work related and no fun....watching people chill while I was concentrating on work I was planning on a week of total relaxation and am so excited about just chilling in my board shorts, getting massages and having Sun & Beer during the day and BBQ & Wine on the beach at night.... Aside from that leisure, is there anything else I should not miss out on... Any recent advice is appreciated atl

atl, First off, allow me to say I am extremely jealous of you. I was also scheduled to go to BKK in Feb, but with the s*it economy I have to postpone it indefinetly. On my last visit to Koh Samui I had the most amazing food at an italian place called Prego in Chaweng Beach. It turned out the owner (an italian fellow) used to be the chef at Zanotti's in Bangkok for many years. We ate there twice and food and the crowd was great both times. As far as the hotel I stayed at Baan Haad nam also in chaweng, but it is too romantic for 3 guys. Good luck.

Report from The Nation dated Wednesday 8 December 2010 :- Samui hit by flood, landslides ================== Samui Island, a tropical paradise, struggled Tuesday with flood and landslides. Following hours of heavy downpour in the morning, floodwater filled many areas of Samui and caused landslides. Piles of rock and landmass spread across the road at the Prapa Mountain Pass, paralysing traffic for a long while. Although ferry and flight services to and from Samui are still running as usual, tourists were advised to check updates before starting their trips.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Tuesday 29 March 2011:- Tourists trapped on Samui ================ Flights to Koh Samui were cancelled for the second day in a row, and ferry services stopped, as worried residents and trapped tourists stayed indoors on the island, being battered by prolonged heavy rainfall. At 1.55pm, Bangkok Airways flight PG 103 took off from Suvarnabhumi airpotl with passengers bound for Samui but was not able to land and had to return to Bangkok. Strong winds made it unsafe for flights in the island. Officials of Raja Ferry also said they suspended services due to waves measuring three meters high between Samui and Surat Thani. Thousands of tourists are stranded in Samui, waiting for the first possible flight back to their homes. Worried tourists are beginning to express frustration at a relative lack of information from airline operators. "Nobody is telling us what is happening. It is difficult with Bangkok Airways. We hang out at the airport the entire day yesterday trying to find a flight. It was chaos at the airport," said Shyatto Raha, a tourist from India who brought his wife to Samui for a holiday. "This lack of information makes me very anxious. We want to get home to our children and family and hopefully we can do it tomorrow,'' Mr Raha added. The weathr office has warned that torrential rain and floodikng in most southern provinces could continue over the next two days.
