Has anyone stayed on lamai beach. Hotels there seem to be cheaper than chaweng beach. How about the nightlife there.

Depend on what do you want a do. Both beaches has few beer bars and good shopping strips. Chewang is more happening since beach are better and more farangs hangs out so it means you will see more tg on chewang than lamai. I was in koh smaui few months ago and first night i spent on lamai then I decided to live on chewang

just did the opposite on my frist trip to samui, about 8 years ago. staid in chaweng but did not like the touristy atmosphere and opted for lamai. since my various trips to samui in the last years only came back to chaweng once and still glad to leave it asap.
lamai - chaweng is about the same discussion like bangkok or pattaya. one people like a lot farang venues others do like it a bit more thai style!
for me lamai rules, others like the mcdonalds/ american/euro trash atmosphere in chaweng. (allthough lamai also does have one mcdonalds nowadays!)
check it for yourself and you will know!

Lamai is definitely more laid back than Chaweng. There are more back to nature resorts than Chaweng, and the whole beach is quieter. I have stayed at both places, and have enjoyed both for what they have to offer.
Both have a selection of TG and bars, Chaweng has much more, but is also busier.
Both are realtively close to one another, so...
Try both out and see what you like!

I was at Lamai Bill Resort in April, nice place to stay but overall I didn't think much of Lamai or Chaweng towns. Lamai beach was quite nice and not crowded so that was good enough for a few days. I thought the standard of TGs was very poor, in fact I didn't touch anything the whole time I was there. If you want beach and a woman why not take a chick to Koh Samet, I thought that was quite nice in places (apart from the main busy beach area) and only a few hours from BKK or an hour or 2 from Pattaya.
