I was wondering: I will be in Jakarta in the end of oktober , beginning of november and it probably is ramadan around that period. Does this mean that all the disco's, massage parlours, and bars are closed. Is there anything to do in Jakarta and where must I go??

Thanks all!

Not too sure about Jakarta, but I was in Karachi last year during the Ramadan period and everything was shut down, stores only opened from 12pm onwards and close at about 4-5pm  The bazaars open from 7pm to about midnight.  My only guess is that in Islamic countries where Muslims form the majority, they share the same routine.

I don't know when the ramadan officially starts but this year Idul Fitri (end of ramadan) is 25 and 26th of November. If you go in October it may not be started yet.
During the ramadan muslim extremists mobs regularly go to the bars and discos to detroy everything and beat up the patrons. Nice isn't it ?
This said the  5* hotels pubs and a number of venues are business as usual.

Historically been no problems, as Marco said the Hotels will be safe enough from minor trouble (bombing excluded), avoid Blok M. Stick  to places like Tiga Pula in Le Meridien, Stix in Park Lane and BATS in the Shangri La. Jakarta is normally a great place to have some fun, there are some really hot Javanese women.  Be cool, be careful!

Oz ir right although there is usually one particular night when they (hotel clubs and bars) are required to shut from memory. The rest of the month is fine, but the numbers of P4P partners drops for the IF week

Better in Bali at that time

Last year BATS was completely shut down for Ramadan.   Blok M was also completely shut down.  Many of the massage parlors close down for the month.  I would anticipate the same happening this year.   The bars close at midnight during Ramadan.  The places that don't get a good crowd until that time just take their lumps and completely shut down.   It's best to avoid jakarta during Ramadan.   If you must go someplace in jakarta, I would recommend Tiga Puluh.   If you live here and have connections, it's not a problem because the girls are desperate for business and it's easy to call them up and get them to come over.   but if you are only a visitor, it's a rough time these days.   A few years ago, this was not the case.  But times have changed.

With the "RAIDS" now common in Jakarta by some of the radical groups, who deem themselves the "religious watchdogs", ALL immoral activities in Indonesia should be done away with.

They've forced - in recent times - establishments (read pubs/night clubs) to close by midnite or latest by 1 AM. But then, they are always willing to accept a "religious donation". The higher the amount, the later the establishment is allowed to keep open. Joints like Stadium are buzzing till wee hours of the morning.

Based on the above fact, Jalan Jaksa - the backpackers' paradise in Jakarta is rather badly hit. Most of the establishments there are hawkers and street vendors with quite a few make shift restaurants, economical (read cheap) accomodation, street walkers etc etc. Now, these "merchants" cannot afford a "reasonable religious dontation" to these groups and the result is Jaksa being raided from time to time. Mobs of 1500-2000 people just swarming thru the place and destroying everything in their path. One has to be quite unfortunate to be at such a place during a raid.

Bottom line is........with Soeharto and his "iron fist in velvet glove" policy out of the way, these so called religious groups - which should actually be  considered unorganised, small scale mafia - reign supreme.

I guess the moral of the story would be to keep away - at all costs from Jawa, where Islam is the predominant religon. This year the fasting month shall be from October 25 to November 24. Thereafter, the lebaran break. Indonesia should be back to normal by December 15th or so.

Enjoy..........

Oz, it was ok 6 weeks ago when I was there and we are still a long way off Ramadan. No problems in TP, B, JJs or the Bloc when I was there, so I doubt the wild groups are running around next week.

In my 10 visits over the past 24 months, I have never been exposed to the so called "RAIDS" and I seriously doubt if the Kopassus boys would tolerate it at present.
