I have a 10 hour layover at Narita. Part of the price of getting a cheap ticket.

What is there to do at the airport? Any massages (with extras) ? Prices?

Is it worth checking in for my flight and then leaving the airport? Do I need a visa (US passport) ? Where to go?

Any suggestions appreciated. This is the flight back to the USA after 2 weeks in Thailand.

Hi RIT,

Nice meeting you during my last trip to LOS.

I'm not aware of any p4p in or around the airport (NRT). I have suffered through this layover before and it sucks. Tokyo is about 2 hours by train from the airport (maybe a bit less) and fairly expensive. I was not looking for p4p in Tokyo so it probably exists but will most likely be expensive. You do need a passport and will go through customs and immigration. Also, may need to leave luggage at the airport if you venture out. I would just get a hotel close by and get some sleep. Let me know how it goes.

Depending on the time of day there are some inexpensive restraunts the the employees eat at the observation deck level but aside from that little else.

Narita was recently shut down by 9 cm (3 in) of snow and the observation by the strandees was there is no where to go, nothing to do, and no where to stay.

IMHO: Unless you are a Airline Club Member Narita is the worst place to have a layover...

LS - Great meeting you as well. Was fun at Soi 33 watching CG working his magic.

CS - Thanks for the food tip. I'll be there from 7am - 5pm. Can't believe there isn't another NRT - SFO flight, but can't knock the ticket price. And, I'm no longer an Airline Club Member.

My luggage will be checked all the way through to the USA, so that's not a problem.

Sucks about Tokyo being so far away.

Don't necessarily need P4P. After all, I'll have had 2 weeks in the LOS. Anything at all nearby?

And, does anyone know if a USA passport holder needs a visa to enter Japan?

There is a webpage dedicated to what to do on a long layover in Narita:

http://www.mgnewman.com/narita/

I suggest you get laid thoroughly immediately before leaving Bangkok.

Most western country passport holders do not need a visa to enter Japan.

CG - Thanks for the URL! If you are in BKK first week of March look me up and I'll buy the first drink. And, certainly I will try and follow your advice.

CE - Thanks. I was browsing the web and the sites I saw all said no visa necessary. But, its always good to get confirmation.

Mr A - I agree, but the cheap ticket limited me.

I've done long layovers in Narita a few times. Each time I've left my bags at the airport and taken the train into Tokyo for lunch and wander around to kill time. You don't need a visa. The train station is below the airport. The train fare is about $50 RT as I remember.

It does take time to drop off bags, get through customs, exchange money, get ticket, wait for train, etc. It's worked well for me because I sleep on the plane to NRT, keep myself busy for the 9 hours, and then sleep on the long flight back to the US.

Hi Retired,
No visa required. Getting through customs takes as much as an hour, bus downtown 2 hours, train 1 hour. Train brings you to Shinjuku station where you could easily be lost for several days. Honestly, if I was stuck in NRT for 10 hours I would likely get a day room at the airport hotel for a shower and a rest and then dinner at one of the many passable eateries, and then get on my next plane. Trying to use that time to get into town and do something interesting is more likely to be stressful, tiring and expensive. I love Tokyo but it costs so much that I generally don't spend a lot of extra time there. Also, any good P4P will cost as much as two weeks of good P4P in LOS or the Philippines. You can get a quick service in Kubuchicho (sp?) from a Thai, Filipino etc for about $150US. Hardly worth it.
